ALLIED CAMPAIGN AT TEMPLE SCHOOL The first of the commencement exercises of the United Hebrew Schools will be held by the pupils of the Delmar School, on Sunday evening, June 7, in the auditorium of the Alger School. The exercises will contain, in addition to the usual and traditional features, such as the valedictory, the , pre- sentation of a gift to the school, and the addresses accompanying the lighting of the symbolic candle ceremony, several recitations from the poetry of Saul Chernichovsky. ('hernichovsky, whose 60th anni- versary the Hebrew literary world is now celebrating, became, after the death of Blank, as the poet laureate of Hebrew literature. It is because of this celebration that the graduation class of 1936 has decided to include in its graduation exercises some of Chernichovsky's poems. This feature will be not only part of the Delmar School exercises, but also of the other two schools, the Philadelphia and the Tuxedo, who are holding their commencement exercises during the same week. The Tuxedo class will hold its graduation ceremony at the B'nai Moshe synagogue, Monday eve- ning„lune 8, and the last of the exercises will be held at the Phil • delphia-Byron auditorium on Ws.- nesday, June 10. The Wednesday evening exercises will he in the form of a joint celebration of all 19311 graduation classes. Pentecost, also , called the Feast of Weeks, is known in Hebrew as Shabuoth. It de- rives its name from the fact that it is celebrated after a week of weeks, seven weeks af- ter the second day of Passover. During Biblical days Shabu- oth was a time of thanksgiving for the harvest. Offerings brought to the Temple and placed on the altar, were in keeping with the gifts of the soil that had been gathered. Today the idea of the har- vest is castled out in the syna- gogue by decorating it with seasonable plants and flowers and by the reading of the Book of Ruth which contains a des- cription of the reaping of the grain and the abundance of the earth. Since post-Biblical days Sha- buoth has come to have a more spiritual meaning, It is desig- nated as the anniversary of the giving of the Ten Command- ments! at Mount Sinai. The story of the revelation at Sinai, which lives in the heart of every Jew, narrates the epochal event of Israel's acceptance of a sacred mission as "a king- dom of priests and a holy peo- ple." Shabuoth commemorates to- day both this solemn occasion and its responsibility. For this reason the festival has been chosen by the Reform Jewish Synagogue as the appropriate time for its Confirmation serv- ice. At this service the boys and girls in Israel are conse- crated to their faith and are admonished to live in accord-, once with the principles and doctrines of Judaism. The serv- ice is of spiritual significance to all Israel for it emphasizes the idea of spiritual freedom and inspires the Jew to renewed loyalty to the great religious teachings promulgated at fy Mount Sinai. Change of Name By DR. EMIL AMBERG It is a well-known fact that in some parts of the world the Jews were given ludicrous names by frivolous ■ and malicious officials. Rindskopf, Ochs, Kuh, Laemrale, Rosenwasser, Rosenfeld, Fleiach- mann and many other much worse names can scarcely have been the choice of the recipients. The Jews were defenseless. It can well be understood that the descendents of those who had been made the objects of ill-meaning and hateful officials, at last revolted and changed names which should not have been given to their ancestors. Animals like doge, etc., cannot ob- ject and change their names but human beings can and, in many instances, should. Of course, tact should be used. An anecdote Is told in this connection. Although the names Cohn, Cohen, Kahan, Kahn, etc., and Levy are very honorable and historically impor- tant names which should not be changed without dire necessity, ■ man called Cohn appeared before ■ judge in Prussia with the re- quest to be allowed to change his name. Woen the judge asked him what name he would like, he flint "Puttkarenter." Now Puttkammer was the name of • very aristo- cratic and well-known family. Be- ing told by the judge that the Puttkammers would scarcely like it, the applicant remarked, if the Puttkammers should feel that way LEASE EXPIRES Must Vacate at Once. $50,000 Stock of High Grade Furniture Must Be Sold Regardless of Cost This Is Your Opportunity to Buy at Tremendous Savings S.
