Dancers Rejects German Bid An invitation from the German ministry of culture to represent the United States at the Interna- tional Dance Festival in Germany to be held in conjunction with the Berlin Olympics has been re- jected by Martha Graham, eminent American danseuse, she announc- ed. In a letter to Rudolf von Laban, head of the German Dance Bureau, Miss Graham said "I would find it impossible to dance in Germany at the 'present time. So many artists whom I respect and admire have been persecuted, have been deprived of the right to work for ridiculous and un- satisfactory reasons, that I should consider it impossible to identify myhelf by accepting the invitation with the regime that has made such things possible. In addition, some of my concert group would not be welcomed in Germany." 114 More Refugees Arrive A PLEDGE OF SERVICE IOC Minimum Charge, $1.50 A MOST RELIABLE INSTITUTION Wo Call for and Deliver to All Parts of do City ilkk s cHusETTc LAUNDRY CO. America and the American Com- mittee Appeal for the Relief of Jews in Poland, a non-sectarian body conducting at present a drive for $1,000,000 for the relief of acute suffering among the Jews in Poland, Congressman Emanuel Celler laid the recent anti-Jewish riots in Poland to the activities of Nazi agents, who are making "a determined attempt to transplant Ilitlerism" in Poland and who are behind the bill now pending be- fore the Polish parliament to pro- hibit the Ilebrew ritual slaughter. ing of cattle, Consulate Stoned TEL AVIV (WNS Palcor Agency)—The Polish consulate in this all-Jewish city was stoned and the consul's signboard was torn down as a crowd of 1,000 Zion- ist-Revisionists marched here af- ter a political meeting to pro- test against anti-Jewish attacks in Poland. Singing "Ilatikvah," the crowd waved the blue-white Zion- ist flag and denounced Stanislaw Lukaszewicz, the Polish consul. When police arrived to disperse the crowd, five were arrested, in- cluding two women. Bail was re- fused for them. The police are guarding the consulate. Bill Safeguarding Schechita P Lower House WARSAW (WNS) — By a ma- jority of only seven votes, the lower house of parliament ap- proved the new kosher slaughter. ing regulations and sent it to the senate for final action. As passed in the lower house the measure' safeguards the practice of schech- ita, but limits Jewish ritual slaugh- tering to such poultry and cattle as are intended for Jewish con- sumption. Kosher fowl and meat are to be sold in special stores to he set up for this purpose. The law provides that schechita is legal in all towns were the Jews form more than three per cent of the total population. Elsewhere Jews may obtain permission to practice schechita upon presenta- tion of petitions to the local au- thorities. The lower house adopted the bill in its present form only after a bitter debate in which two amendments proposed by those who had drafter the original law which would have entirely out- lawed schechita. One amendment would have imposed a stiff tax on kosher meat and poultry and the other would have barred schech- ita in all towns and cities where the Jews numbered less that 15 per cent of the total population. Approval of the bill in the sen- ate is regarded as • foregone con- clusion and it will become effec- tive Jan. 1, 1937. So far as the Jews are con- , cerned passage of the bill gives them a victory on the religious question but in the economic field they suffered • serious setback. The chief objective of the orig- inal anti-schechita bill was to break the Jewish control of the meat industry. This the amended measure accomplishes by elimin- ating nearly 20,000 Jews from the meat slaughtering industry. It was learn- ed from reliable sources that the Polish statesman spoke frankly and sincerely. It said that he Promised that his government was preparing measures to put an end to the anti-Semitic outbreaks. Ile also admitted that the compro- mise schechita law was worked out by the government in order to satisfy the religious demands of the Jews and the economic de- mands of the Polish peasants. lie admitted that this compromise would ruin Jews in the meat bus- iness but explained that the gov- ernment could do nothing about it because if it ignored the peas- ants it would be accused of mak- ing the Jews privileged persons and thereby stir up the peasants to new anti-Semitic riots. He also indicated that Poland was ready to help Polish Jewry set up a system of co-operatives but doubt- ed whether the Jews were adapt- ed to such a system. Polish Union Sets April 12 as World-Wide Day of Protest a NEW YORK (WNS)—A world- wide day of protest among Jews of Polish extraction on April 12 has been proclaimed by the ex- ecutive of the World Union of Polish Jews, which has executive offices in New York, London, Tel Aviv and Warsaw. In telegraphic instructions to its affiliated organ- izations in Palestine, England, Canada, France, Argentine, Urug- uay, Mexico, Belgium, Brazil, South Africa and Czechoslovakia, the executive urged that April 12 be utilized for public demonstra- tions against the anti-Semitic ter- ror in Poland for the raising of funds for the relief of Polish Jew- ry. U. S. and League of Nations Urged to Intercede NEW YORK (WNS) —Charg- ing the Polish Government with "deliberate violations of its pledges made in the treaty of June, 1919, in which the Jews, together with other minority groups, were as- sured full equality of rights and status," an all-day emergency con- ferenc, . on the Polish situation called by the American Jewish Congress adopted a resolution con- taining a 14-point indictment and urging the friendly intercession of the United States and investigation and action by the League of Na- tions to put an end to the violence against Polish Jews and to restore to them their full rights. The 1,000 delegates representing some 500 oranizations heard addresses by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the Congress; Louis Lipsky, vice-president, who has just re- turned from Europe; Dr. Samuel Margoshes, editor of The Day, for- mer Attorney General Carl Sher- man, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, Dr. Chaim Tschernowitz and Louis Segal, secretary of the Jewish Na- tional Workers Alliance. The conference also urged the United States -in all friendliness to intercede on behalf of the Jews of Poland and in the interests of international law, of humanity and to convey to the present author- ities in Poland its deep concern with regard to the violation of their obligations to the Jewish people." The conference further called upon the League o f N a - tions to investigate the desperate position of Polish Jewry and "to take such measures as will lead to the reestablishment of law, order and equality in the organized life of Poland." In response to the appeal of an important leader of the German Socialist movement, who made his way secretly to the United States, the Young Circle League of the Workmen's Circle, has launched a campaign to raise a fund for the anti-Nazi underground move- ment in Germany. The fund, to be raised by the Young Circle League among its membership, the trade unions and Jewish and progressive groups will be sent to the central organization of the underground body in Germany. Warns of Pogroms in Austria VIENNA (WNS) — An open appeal to violence against the Jews was made by Leo Kuntchik head of the Catholic Labor Feder- ation, in an inflammatory speech before a mass meeting of the Freiheitsbund, his private armed militia. Mincing no words in his assault on the Jews, Kuntchik called on the government "to abandon its ostrich-like policy with regard to the Jews." Ile warned of the "people's anger," which would lead to pogroms and slaugh- ter, "if the government did not peaceably deprive the Jews of their rights and eliminate them from all phases of Austrian life." "It is futile," he said, "to pre- tend that there is no Jewish prob- lem in Austria. There are only two solutions. Either to under- take at once a moderate and ra- tional solution or to wait until the excited wrath of the Austrian people will wipe out the destruc- tive work of the Jews."
