Gets Award of Sigma Alpha
Mu for Infantil Paraly-
sis Immunization
The Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity
Award for outstanding achieve.
nient for the year 1935 was pre-
sented at the 26th annual conven-
tion banquet of Sigma Alpha Mu
on Dec. 29 at the Coronado Hotel
in St. Louis, Mo., to Dr. Maurice
Brodie, a member of the McGill
University Chapter.
Dr. Brodie has won international
fame for his research and develop-
ment of a serum for infantile para-
lysis immunization. The New York
City Department of Health has
provided him with a special labor.
atory and the Warm Springs Foun-
dation, sponsored by President
Roosevelt, has recently equipped a
laboratory for him for the manu-
facture of his serum in greater
quantities.
The vaccine is the result of five
years of intensive experimentation
with monkeys. Before subjecting
children to the vaccine, Dr. Brodie
and six"of his staff assistants in-
oculated themselves without any
untoward effects. The serum has
been used by the United States
Public Health Service during the
last epidemic in North Carolina
and Virginia. Approximately 10,-
000 children have already been in-
oculated and not one has since con-
tracted infantile paralysis. Dr.
Brodie plans to vaccinate at least
60,000 persons in order to definitely
establish the safety and efficacy of
his serum. The results of his ex-
periments to date have been given
at several meetings of the Amer-
Iran Public Health Association, the
New York Academy of Medicine
and others.
Dr. Brodie was born in Liver-
pool, England, in 1903 and attend-
ed McGill University in Montreal,
Canada. In his senior year, he was
awarded the Woods Medal in Medi-
cine. Dr. Brodie is now assistant
professor of bacteriology at New
York University and Bellevue Hos-
pital Medical School, a member of
the American Bacteriological So-
ciety, Fellow of the American Pub-
lic Health Association and other
scientific societies.
The Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity
Award was presented this year for
the first time by Sigma Alpha Mu
Fraternity, one of the largest Jew-
ish national college fraternities in
the United States and Canasta, and
the award will be presented each
year hereafter to a member of the
fraternity for outstanding achieve-
ment in any field.
A committee of 12 business and
