ber of elements in the Gentile cul-
ture which are good and beautiful,
which I believe we car, well afford
to absorb. In doing this, however,
we must follow the traditional
laws of assimilation. We must for
example, see that our assimilation
does not endanger our identity or
individuality. We must assimilate
into our body and being elements
in our contemporary or modern
culture but we can not allow our-
selves to be entirely absorbed and
assimilated by it. If we allow our
individuality and identity to sink
and to be swallowed up by the
ocean of humanity that surrounded
us and by its predominant civili-
zation not all of which is ideal then
we shall melt out of existence. Sec-
ondly we most be discriminating
in our assimilations. We must eel-
ect the good and the beautiful and
discard the bad and the deleterious.
We must not ape Gentile ways and
views just because they are Gentile
and bear with it the insignia of
prestige and power. Thirdly, the
process must be a slow and un-
conscious one. We must not slavish.
l y copy and imitate. And lastly
when we accept such Ideas and
customs we most see to it that
they blend and harmonize with the
spirit and genius of our heritage
—lest our Judaism become a mere
eulectic hedge podge—or something
that will have little or no kinship
to that which was tried and tested
by the Ages.
