2,100 Chanukahs

Much is being made of the fact that this
is the 2100th anniversary of the Chanukah
festival.
The sage steeped in Jewish law and tra-
dition must smile at the sudden outburst
of enthusiasm over the Jewish power to
survive in spite of all obstacles.
Ile who knows his history may ask:
Why not rejoice even more exuberantly
because we had already observed the Pass-
over for 3,427 years?
Or why not proclaim a five-year holiday
over the approach of the year 5,700 on our
calendar?
Our history is so rich in experience that
a mere 2,100 years is only one of many
cycles of time during which we have been
tried by many fires, and survived all the
destructive forces that came our way.
And yet, there is much to rejoice in.
Even the extremest patriot for whom Jew-
ish history per se, taken in its totality, is
always a subject for pondering and thrill-
ing in, must make comparisons, between
the days of the Maccabees of 2,100 years
ago and the humbled masses of Jewry to-
day. And we must ask ourselves whether
we have weakened for the moment, or
whether the spark still flickers which at
any time may flare up into a rebellion of
Jewish loyalty to tradition, to Law, to that
eternal spirit which has made Israel an
undying people.
We are surrounded on all sides by ene-
mies. Even in most liberal countries the
Bill of Rights is occasionally being torn in
our faces. But we remain calm and com-
posed. We are unafraid. We have the
experience of two millenia since the Mac-
cabees back of us and another set of ex-
periences of three additional millenia
which preceded the Maccabean triumphs.
This long history admonishes us to be pa-
tient and never abandon hope.. Already
the Chanukah lights assume a new glow
in the Palestine in which the Hasmoneans
fought 2,100 years ago. The Jewish back
is being straightened and strengthened.
Out of the tragedy imposed by a thousand
enemies we shall emerge strengthened by
the faith regained and regathered with a
spirit of dignity and pride and determina-
tion that we shall build for ourselves a
new life which will refuse to permit the
trampling under-foot of our sacred human
rights and our holiest traditions.
Two thousand and one hundred years
form a mere portion of a much longer
cycle of events in Jewish history; but they
do serve to remind us of many sacred ex-
periences, of a power that was once our
people's and can once again be ours—nay,
is certain once again to be ours.
Somehow, Chanukah 'is no longer a
minor holiday: it is a major event. We
rejoice in its story and its lessons, and we
gather from it relief in hours of sorrow.

And the Nazis Gloat!

Germans were not informed by the Nazi
press on the close vote which gave Ameri-
can athletes the sanction of the Amateur
Athletic Union to participate in the 1936
Berlin Olympics. Insofar as Germany is
concerned, it is reported, "the Americans'
sport conscience won and the boycott agi-
tators and Olympic saboteurs have been
defeated."
But Germans are not the only ones from
whom the truth is being hidden. AmeH-
can athletes are similarly misled in that
they are not informed of the true state of
affairs and of the new determination of
Nazi propagandists to make of the Olym-
pics a Nazi spectacle. Insofar as our own
athletes are concerned, the American
Olympic Committee's leaders are respon-
sible for failure to protect true sportsman-
ship against Nazi tactics.
On the day after the news was broad-
cast of the results of the A. A. U. conven-
tion, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goeb-
bels announced that the Olympics would
form the central part of a New German
film, "the trend and contents of which will
be based on the thought of making vis-
ible the idea of international Olympic
Games within the framework of the new
Germany." It is reported from Berlin that
since many nations will object to seeing
their athletes used as a backgraund for
such a propaganda film, separate versions
are to be made for each of the large nix-
' g tiona.
It is clear that the Nazis are set on
capitalizing on their Olympic victory and
will do exactly what the opponents of the
movements to grant the Olympics to Berlin
insisted would happen. The Nazis are
'Hosting. They won a great victory for
bigotry and Fascism through the aid of
Brundage, Sherrill and the selfish ath-
1"tea for whom participation in sports and
a trip abroad is more important than

sportsmanship.

Welcome, Labor Zionists

I)etroit is truly privileged to be able to
act as host to the 30th anniversary con-
vention of the Poale-Zeire Zion beginning
with next Wednesday.
Representing the dominating faction in
Zionism, the labor Zionist bodies command
more than respect: they demand the inter-
est of all Jews because they have climbed
to positions of supremacy is Palestine and
in the ranks of Zionism. Even their staun-
chest opponents must not only reckon with
this movement but must grant it the honor
which is due to the leading faction in Jew-
ish nationalism.
It is immaterial what the causes are
which helped to boost labor Zionism to a
position of dominance. The charges are
that the so-called "allegemeine" Zionists
contributed to the success of the laborites
both by contributing some of their votes
to them in the last elections for the World
Zionist Congress delegates, as well as by
their indifference and lethargy which
caused them to stay away from polls on
an important election day. All the more
reason, then, why the laborites should be
honored for their devotion and their in-
terest, for their loyalty to their cause.
Other Zionist parties this have much to
learn from the laborites, and non-laborites
in Detroit will have particular occasion
to make a study of the methods and prin-
ciples of the Poale-Zeire Zion party which
have helped them to supplant the general
Zionists from virtual leadership of the
movement.
So much with regard to the party dif-
ferences, and the importance of the Poale-
Zeire Zion domination of the movement,
as'the counterpart of the Palestine Hista-
druth. Now, with regard to the conven-
tion proper and the problems that will
face it.
The laborites ha:e made great contri-
butions to Palestine's reconstruction. There
is much, also, to be criticized in the move-
ment, but the negative must not be per-
mitted to detract from the very postive ele-
ments of labor Zionism. The present con-
vention comes here at a time when Jewry
throughout the world is sorely tried; when
our fate is being weighed in the balance
and more than ever before the respon-
sibility of solving our depressing problems
in the midst of a hostile world becomes
our own duty. We have nothing to ex-
pect from our neighbors, many of whom
might have encouraged its were they not
themselves today drawn into a worldwide
whirlpool of strife and depression. It is
the responsibility of all Zionists to help
build an ever-stronger movement which
will speed up the settlement of even larger
numbers of Jews than have come to Pales-
tine in recent years. The Land of Israel
must be built speedily, untiringly, with a
devotion unequalled in human endeavors.
When a Zionist faction gathers to plan fur-
ther efforts for this historic task, it must
receive the encouragement of all other
branches of the movement.
It is in this spirit that we welcome the
delegates who are to gather here for the
convention and wish them God-speed in
their efforts. They are faced with grave
responsibility. We wish for them the
blessing of strength and courage to be
able, together with all other factions in
Jewry, to carry on the great work for
Palestine's upbuilding.

Rosenbloom, whose unorthodox, but

the title of "Slapsie Maxie", will
undoubtedly earn his studio pay,
judging from the action in various
scenes slated for him.

One of the best known figures

Previously he was an official of the

field, officials indicated to us that
there were definite plans for con-

London, but in other European
cities.

official papers have already been
signed, sealed and delivered. The

YEARS AGO

By DAVID EMANUEL

''" , in rich, , 1,15. Seven Arta Feature Sind , to

This year the Chanukah candles have extra-
ordinary significance. This year they illumine a
remarkable anniversary. Exactly 21 centuries
have passed since the Jews, through joy and soi-
row, have been celebrating this Feast of Lights.
Two millenia are a long period, but the
Jews have a long memory. In homes, in syna-
gogues and in schools, at organization meetings
and other gatherings, this anniversary will be
noted and feted. In New York, for example. the
Jewish Education Association is turning its an-
nual dinner into a special jubilee celebration. On
such an occasion the old story deserves to be
retold.
Twenty-one hundred years ago, the Seleu-
cids who ruled the regions north of Palestine,
and the Ptolemies who ruled Egypt, were en-
gaged in mortal combat to decide which of
them should possess what was left of Alexander's
short-lived empire. Caught between the two
warring nations, as in the jaws of a vise, was
tiny Palestine. There lived the Jews, clinging
to their old spiritual faith in a world of Hellen-
istic skepticism and paganism. But even among
them the canker had begun its depredations.
Many of the Jews were casting off the faith of
their fathers, having sipped of the heady wine of
the Greeks, which in the end leaves a bitter taste.
But their defection only increased the zeal of
the faithful.

Antiochus' Twisted Mind

In the year 170 B. C. E. (Before the Com-
mon Era), Antiochus IV, ruler of Syria, dream-
ing of world empire, marched hi* armies into
Egypt. The campaign ended in a stalemate, and
a peace that was only a truce was signed. On
the way back he learned that the Jewish Hellen-
ist, Menelaus, who had recently paid him a hand-
some sum for the high-priesthood, had been driven

out of Jerusalem. His wrath, embittered by his
check in Egypt, found a convenient outlet. the
sacked Jerusalem and robbed the Temple.
Two years later he again descended upon
Egypt. • This time he was summarily ordered
home by an emissary of Rome. Antiochus had
to obey and his humiliation was complete. Again
the Jews proved a convenient scapegoat. Giving
credence to a rumor that they had rejoiced at
his defeat, he attacked Jerusalem on a Sabbath,
when the use of weapons, even for self-defense,
was forbidden. Thousands were butchered or
sold into slavery and the city was nearly des-
troyed.

Into Antiochus' twisted mind crept the idea
that the Jews were responsible for his humilia-
tion. They were different, no he suspected and
hated them. Ile determined to destroy their
separatism, to compel them to adopt the Greek
gods and the Greek way of life. In the Temple
he erected a statue of Jupiter and sacrificed a
, swine on the sacred altar. Then followed decrees

' forbidding, on pain of death, circumcision, the
observance of the Sabbath, or even the posses-
sion of the Torah. The Chassidim, as the zealous

loyalists called themselves, fled to the caves in
the hills of Judaea,
