Reply to Criticisms on Activ-
ity of Haavarah in
Palestine

THE LEGAL CHRONICLE

This Saturday, Dec. 21, Jews throughout the world will celebrate not
only the first day of Chanukah but also the 75th birthday of
Miss Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah and greatest living
Jewel. in the world. In this first of a series of two articles.
Mrs. David de Sola Pool gives a brilliant picture of Zionism's
first lady and the Jewish scene in which she played so notable
• role for 50 years.

On Dec. 21, 1860, in the city of Baltimore, there
was born to Rabbi Benjamin Szold and his wife, Sophia

Agency)—Replying to criticism
centering about the activities of
Reserve, the transfer bureau pro -
riding for the removal of Jewish
capital from Germany to Pales-
tine in the form of German goods,
the Executive of the Jewish
Agency for Palestine, under whose
supervision the bureau is now
functioning, issued a statement
here asserting that the Mama
represented the only means of res-
cuing the Jews and Jewish capital
from Germany for settlement in
Palestine. The executive pointed
eat that in view of the embargo
on the export of currency now in
force in Germany the sole possi-
bility for emigrants to salvage a
maximum of their property was
through the transfer of their capi-
tal in goods whose sterling equiv-
alent did not return to Germany
but remained in Palestine. This
activity of the Heavers has been
attacked as a violation of the anti-
Nazi boycott.
The Jewish Agency Executive
also stressed the fact that without
the organized system of transfer
through the channels of the Hal-
Tara the rush of prospective immi-
grants to undertake such a con-
version of their capital independ-
ently would have resulted in a
state of anarchy injurious not
only to the individual immigrants
but to the home industries of Pal-
eetine as well. Competition among
individual persons seeking to ex-
change their resources for the
same type of merchandise and ex-
ploitation by private agents would
have greatly reduced the value
of the assets of the immigrants,
the Executive states. The Hu-
ssars, however, forestalls such dan-
gers through a plan of centralized
selling in which it acts as the trus-
ts* without profit- for the indi-
vidual, levying only the cost of
overhead expenses. At the same
time it protects Palestine industry
by scrupulously avoiding the im-
portation of any products similar
to those manufactured here. At
present the transactions of the
Ileavara make possible the trans-
fer of $5,000,000 annually.
Although the market in Palestine
for foreign goods is limited, the
pleasure of Jewish capital from
Germany is enormous.

Refugees Trained As
Chalutzim in Denmark

COPENIIAGEN (WNS) —
Since the spring of 1933, 230
young Jewish refugees from
Germany have been trained on
the chalutzim farms in Den-
mark and have gone to Pales-
tine. Another 216 are still re.
ceiving training and 90 have
been sent to training farms in
other countries to serve as
group leaders. The work of
chalutzim training is under the
direction of Benjamin Slor, a
Palestinian Jew now living In
Copenhagen. The Danish-Jew-
ish German Relief Fund ex-
pended $5 per month per head
for the refugees to furnish
them with health insurance,
traveling expenses and work-
ing clothes. The relief fund
has received help from the
Joint Distribution Committee
and the British General Fund.
The Danish Jews, who number
6,000, also maintain a soup
kitchen for the refugees in
Copenhagen. The B'nai B'rith
lodge has raised $11,000 to
send German-Jewish children
to Palestine and has furnished
three-week vacations to 120
German-Jewish children in Den-
mark for the last two years.

BERLIN (WNS) — Damage claims totalling many millions
of marks have been filed with the German office by Czechoslo-
vakia, Rumania, and Holland in behalf of their citizens of Jewish
race or faith who are being deprived of their property and econo-
mic rights in Germany as a result of the new Nazi drive to force
foreign Jews out of the country. Diplomatic quarters here report

that virtually every foreign country will shortly make similar claims and will unite for
joint international action through the World Court and the League of Nations, unless
Germany reimburses foreign Jews for their property. Some observers here believe that
if Germany remains adamant, foreign countries will retaliate by impounding the prop-
erty of German citizens in their countries.
The entire problem, which may yet result in an International protest to Germany,
