Zion Flag Day for Land Redemption Pant 0)7E) method is in the realm of action, namely the easiest way—aside from all that, I thought that Jim Wise had brains. He has identified him- self with the shocking brainless- ness of those whom Sinclair Lewis amusingly calls the "patriots of the Moscow Subway;" he has em- braced the nauseous affection of those who, in the manner of Waldo Frank, babble of the "Soviet fa- therland." Mr. Wise accuses the American Jewish Committee of "bartering their people's security and honor for a mess of Fascist pottage." The emptiness of what observation and its lack of intellectual integrity are simply astonishing. For there are no Fascists in America. Fascists are the proponents of the totali- tarian slave-state. No fascist phi- losophy or concerted action exists in America. What we have here are the more or less normal in- fringements of guaranteed liber- ties, the more or less normal bru- talities against labor, which have always taken place in democratic societies run by no imperfect a crea- ture as the so-called homo sapiens. To call these normal ills of society fascist is (1) carefully to prevent their amelioration and (2) in this particular age to create fascism where there was none. It is a blat- ant and dishonest Communist trick to call these things Fascism. Its purpose is to create Fascism on the supposition that the sooner Fascism (lately discovered by the Marxians to be a "necessity") comes about the nearer will the proletarian re- volution be brought. Any Jew who is lured into using this trick is a potentiol pogromrhik. He—not the gentlemen of the American Jewish Committee. Next Mr. Wise ascends to what he conceives to be a higher plane. "To frame excuses for the political affiliations of one's co-racialists is to invite a status of political infer- iority for oneself." That sounds handsome. It will not bear exami- nation. It is something more and something other than having "poli- tical affiliations" to embrace and proclaim a philosophy which (Fas- cist or Communist) holds (1) that it is in possession of truth so neces- sary that in its name it may (2) stamp out all opposition, including mere non-agreement in blood and dirt (Jews, pacifists, democrats, Christians or bourgeois intellec- tuals, the clergy, the kulaks, etc.) and which holds that (3) it must make a complete break with all the central traditions of Western civ- ilization and create as its ultimate goal a type of human being who will no longer be recognisable as human by us: the racial or social state-slave. Isn't such a view of life just a little more than a "poli- tical affiliation?" And we Jews are in a minority, you know. We shall hardly be permitted to maintain our rights and our aspirations if we propose to bring down in shame and agony the civilization within which we very properly insist upon those rights and proclaim those as- pirations. Yes, every Jewish Com- munist (or Fascist!) is a menace and a disgrace to the Jewish peo- ple. Our stake in civilization is the stake of liberty, of flexibility, of cultural pluralism, of minority rights, of peace within society as well as among nations; our stake is the stake of justice and mercy, not of the tyranny of any minority under any pretext, not of the rulers by proscription and hunger and the practitioners of blood-purges under any slogan or according to any theory.
