A Hitler-Feted General
A Hitler-feted general — the eminent
Charles H. Sherrill — has returned to the
United States with a new interpretation
of sportsmanship.
"It does not concern me one bit the way
the Jews in Germany are being treated,
any more than the lynching of Negroes in
the South of our own country," stated this
Brigadier General, a former Yale star.
Hitler could not have spoken more elo-
quently in defense of a new doctrine which
threatens to shackle democracy.
We are not worried by what Brig. Gen.
Sherrill had to say. We refuse to be as
alarmed as many of our readers became
when they read his statement.
It is our contention that Am( means who
are deeply concerned over what is occur-
ring throughout the world, in dictatorial
efforts to crush every vestige of human
rights, will resent what this man, who has
returned from a seven-week's visit with
Nazis, has to say. As long as democracy
continues to rule this land, we are inclined
to believe — even if this belief is based
on hope — that fair-minded Americans
will say to this general:
You have been feted by Hitler and
his cohorts and you are unconcerned
with what is happening in Germany.
That's your business as a man mis-
led by prejudice.
But you had the audacity to state
that you are as little concerned with
what is happening to the Jews in Ger-
many as you are with lynchings in the
South. Let us remind you, therefore,
what you, as a general, ought to
know:
There never have been, there never
will be, government-sanctioned lynch-
ings in this country.
You have libeled not the Jews of
America, or the Jews of the world.
You have libeled the American peo-
Ie.
And if you need to be reminded,
let us tell you the story of one man, a
sportsman—he happened to be a Jew,
dear General — Edmund Baumgar-
ten, a member of a Polish soccer team,
who was stoned to death by a Nazi
mob at Ratibor, German Upper Sil-
esia, on Sept. 15., when he came to
play with a German team. This is a
sample of the sportsmanship of YOUR
NAZI FRIENDS!
If you need to be told — and you
evidently do — let us remind you that
Jews are not the only ones to protest;
that Protestants, through the import-
ant organ, The Churchman, and
Catholics, through their important
magazine, America, have made the
plea against American participation
in the Olympic Games because no de-
cent people can possibly participate
in events with butchers and barbar-
ians.
But our most serious grievance is
that you should have libeled the
American people, especially the
South, and the American Government.
What a shame, that a prominent
American should return from Ger-
many imbued with the teachings of a
government out to crush liberty of
conscience and the rights of human
beings to live normally, and that he
should forget his own traditions and
background as to charge his govern-
ment with being responsible with the
same guilt which today marks Hitler
Germany as the most medieval and
barbaric country on the face of the
globe!
For such a libel, you will never be
forgiven.

The Jackson Anniversary
Jews throughout Michigan are un-
doubtedly interested in the 75th anniver-
sary of Temple Beth Israel of Jackson.
The mere fact that a community outside
of Detroit has functioned continuously for
75 years is interesting in itself. It must
be remembered that the Jewish commu-
nity of Detroit is able to trace its history
only about 85 years. Furthermore, the
fact that the history of the settlement of
Jews in Michigan can be traced back only
170 years makes a 75-year-old community
in the state almost a pioneer.
We are pleased to join with the Jewish
communities in this state in congratulat-
ing the Jackson Jewish community and
Temple Beth Israel on the occasion of
Li anniversary, and to wish for it that
should continue to grow in strength.

Martyrs of Conscience
Writing for the New York Times from
London, in comment upon the presenta-
tion of "Yoshe Kalb," Charles Morgan
makes a strikingly interesting observation
relative to martyrdom of conscience, from
which Jews suffer perhaps more than any
other people. Mr. Morgan writes:
I think it is, perhaps, not yet fully rea-
lized across the Atlantic how profoundly
civilization has deteriorated since 1914. Even
in England it is not yet understood that
within a few hundred miles thousands of men
and women are being punished not for any
crime they have committed, not for any overt
set of any kind, but for being born as they
were born and for believing what they be-
lieve. There are more martyrs of conscience
in Europe today than in the fiercest period of
the Inquisition, and a play such as "Yoshe
Kalb" is interesting not because it is con-
cerned with many Jews or with one Jew but
because it is concerned with a human being
who instead of answering violence with vio-
lence, pursues in his own life the doctrine of
"resist not evil."
