Three Returned Tourists Describe
. Experiences In Palestine and At
Lucerne's World Zionist Congress

James I. Ellmann, Rabbi Leon
Fran and Miss Anne hianson, who
returned from Palestine, and the
first two also from the World Zion-
ist Congress in Lucerne, reported
on their impressions last Wednes-
day evening at an overflow meet-
ing of the Zionist organization of
Detroit, held in the Henry 11 Room
of Hotel Statler. Dr. Harry E.
August, chairman of the educa-
tional committee, presided.
Miss Manson, a former president
of Junior Hadassah of Detroit, told
of the work of the Newish Na-
tional Fund in reclaiming the land
of Palestine, and referred to the
Haifa Bay reclamation project
sponsored by Hadassah. She espe-
cially emphasized the work of the
Junior Hadassah colony, Meir
Shfeyah, which she called "a jewel
in the midst of desolation," where
115 children are cared for and ed-
ucated.

keep its word on the observance of
the Sabbath.
The resolution on the Haavarah,
the commission in charge of ac-
cepting German goods brought into
Palestine by German settlers, de-
creed that the liaavarah must go
on because Jews must leave Ger-
many, but, as explained by Rabbi
Fram, extra dealings must be elim-
inated and the Haavarah must be
placed in charge of the Zionist
Executive.

Louis Oppenheim
Called by Death

Louis Oppenheim, well known in
Detroit and northern Michigan,
passed away Friday morning, Oct.
11. Funeral services were con-
ducted by Rabbi A. hf. Hershman

Mr. Ellmann's Address

Mr. Ellmann spoke of three
things which impressed him and
upon which he based the following
recommendations:
1. The industrial development
of the country: It takes less money
to put one in industry than on a
farm. It is exceedingly important,"
he stated in emphasizing this point,
that industrial effort should be
speeded because it will determine
the number of people who will
come into Palestine."
2. The land question. Declar-
ing that the Jewish National Fund
is the outstanding thing in Pal-
estine today, Mr. Ellmann pointed
out that while, during the past four
years, the Jewish population grew
from 17 to 26 per cent, the amount
of land owned by Jews grew only
from 5 to 6 per cent of the total.
lie urged that the National Fund
be given complete power to do all
land purchasing, and that individ-
ual investors should share in what-
ever profits may be derived from
National Fund efforts. Mr. Ell-
mann also urged that a great ef-
fort be put forth to make a success
of the forthcoming Land Restora-
tion drive, which will be conducted
in Detroit as part of the national
drive now in progress.
3. Need of a court of honor. Mr.
Ellmann pointed to the numerous
controversies that arise from time
to time and urged the establish-
ment of a court of honor or tri-
bunal "so that the people may
have a guide that will create con-
fidence."
Rabbi Franis Address
Reviewing the results of the
World Zionist Congress, Rabbi
Fram said that the delegates dis-
Played a lack of respect for oratory
because they were engaged in seri-
ous business.
"Over the Congress," he said,
"!ay the shadow of Vienna because
everyone knew that a new party
was meeting there." Ile pointed out
that the state party threatened
with a turn toward Vienna, and
that this resulted in the unity that
brought Dr. Chaim Weizman back
