Lehman Denounces Nazi.
Persecution of Jews in Nazi Ger-
many was denounced by Governor
Lehman in the souvenir journal is-
sued in connection with the "Night
of Stars," the benefit theatrical
production given for Jewish relief
Wednesday evening in Madison
Square Garden.
The Governor urges financial
support for the emergency fund for
the relief and rehailitation of
German Jews and refugees and the
settlement of Jews in Palestine.
The performance is the climax
of the effort to raise New York Ci-
ty's share of the $3,200,000 na-
tional quota of the United Jewish
Appeal, conducted by the American
Palestine Campaign and the Joint
Distribution Committee.
"The United Jewish Appeal is
our answer to those iniquitous
forces which invoke discrimination
and hatred and denial of oppor-
tunity," Governor Lehman says.
"The two organizations w h i c h
make it up have been working des-
perately to rebuild the broken lives
of thousands upon thousands of the
Jews of Germany who have sud-
denly found themselves without a
home in the very land in which for
countless generations they and
their forebears have lived and
worked."
Aid of Jews in Germany
After describing the devotion of
citizens of Jewish faith to Ger-
many and their part in the up-
building of the nation, the Governor
declares that: "In peace they con-
tributed to Germany's well-being;
In war they laid down their lives
for Germany's greatness."
"Suddenly, almost without warn-
ing, by official and national edict,"
continues the article. "all the Jews
of Germany - 603,000 peoples -
were singled out for destruction,
economically, socially and political-
ly. They have been harried and
driven out of their positions in
business, In public life, in industry

walks of life have been ruthlessly
and without pity deprived of their
means of livelihood and of the pri-
mary rights of citizenship. Even
the right to education is now being
denied the Jewish children and
youths, regardless of theic intel-
lectual qualifications. These men
and women in great numbers are
now undergoing indescribable suf-
fering and hardship. They must be
helped lest they grow hungry; they
must be aided lest they yield to
their despair."
30,000 Sent to Palestine
After recalling that he has been
associated with the Joint Distribu-
. Goo Committee from its inception,
Governor Lehman says that al-
ready more than 30,000 Jews have
made their way from Germany to
Palestine, aided by the Central Bu-
reau for the Settlement of German
Jews in Palestine. A "substantial
part" of the United Jewish Appeal
Fund will go to this agency, the
Governor points out.
, "Our appeal concerns itself, not
with politics nor with propaganda,"
continues Governor Lehman. "It is
, directed solely to human relief and
human rebuilding."
Other bodies, the Governor. says,
may voice the "indignation and
horror which right-thinking men
and women the world over feel in
the presence of persecution and
discrimination." But the task of
the United Jewish Appeal, he con-
Icludes, in to furnish funds to suc-
cor despairing men and women.
