This same correspondent further cables by Harold Fields in the Harvard Univer-
to his paper the following information:
sity Quarterly, in which he states:
Klaus Selzner, chief of the administrative
bureau of the Nazi party, addressing 1,600
representatives of foreign Nazi parties in
Erlangen, declared:
"Foreign German party members are mo-
bilized outside the reach of German laws to
fight for Nazi doctrines. Through the party
organizations they have become a part of
German unity and they know they have a
homeland, for they have a leader."
It is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt
that Nazi Germany is bent upon enmesh-
ing the entire world in its net of bigoted
propaganda. In the long run this may
seriously hurt the position of Germans in
this country, and the liberally - minded
should step in at once to call a halt to the
disgraceful method of linking groups in
this country with the sadists and butchers
in the Reich. These German-Americans
should be the first to protest against the
outrages in Germany and the attempts to
condone them through the spread of Nazi
propaganda in the United States.
How Many Jews Read Books?
Do Jews — boasting the honor of being
the People of the Book — read books?
Judging by the number of members in
the Jewish Publication Society, the ans-
wer would be in the negative.
A most discouraging report is submitted
to us by this society relative to the status
of Detroit's readers of Jewish literature.
Out of an approximate population of
75,000 only 48 are members of the society.
Private booksellers and publishers also
inform us that the number of books sold
to Detroit Jews is astonishingly low.
The Jewish Publication Society is espe-
cially deserving of support. It publishes
only the finest classics and consistently
makes definite contributions to Jewish
literature. Aside from the point of value
offered to members— who receive at least
three books a year for their nominal mem-
bership dues — the society's efforts should
be encouraged.
There should be at least 500 Jewish
members of the society from Detroit. But
at no time were there more than 100 mem-

that it will soon be remedied by a mass
