THE SCIENCE OF THE YEARS
'Tis time to study scripture's
history
At five; at ten to study mishnah
well,
At ten and three fulfillment of the
laws,
At fifteen on Talmudic thought to
swell,
At eighteen entrance into martial
bonds
At twenty contemplate a livelihood,
Attain life's greatest pow'r at one
score ten,
At forty, then thy understanding's
best,
At fifty, men seek thy counsel then.
At three score years thou'rt come
into old age
Thy head is hoary when thou'rt
three score ten,
At eighty God sloth grant thy
strength renewed,
At ninety, thou art bent and dim
thy ken.
The century doth mark the end of
strife,
Thou art as passed, and thin? no

Thomas of Aquino was very
much influenced by Jewish philo-
sophical writings. It is well known
that he was a devout student of
Jewish books and regarded their
authors with much respect. Unlike
other scholastic \masters, he went
far in friendly tolerance to the
Jews and objected to their forcible
conversion to Christianity. In fact,
he thought and advocated for the
Jews the free exercise of their
religious beliefs and practices. On
the other hand, in some of his
writings (especially his "De reg-
'mine Judaeorum") , in dealing
with the Jews, he employs lan-
guage which is quite offensive and
which, no doubt, must logically
tend to their expulsion, robbery
and massacre. A fine study of the
attitude of Thomas of Aquino to
the Jews is available in Jacob
Guttmann, "Das Verhaeltnlse des
Thomas von Aquino rum Juden-
thum and zur juedischen Littera.
tur," Goettingen, 1891.
