them were killed. No less than 1,100 citations
for valor were awarded to Jews and three of
them received the rare Congressional Medal of
Honor. Aside from these figures, two specific
instances of Jewish patriotism during the War
come to mind. In Caldwell, N. J., there lived
the Jacobson family, consisting of seven sons
and one daughter. Upon the declaration of
war six sons enlisted while the mother and daugh-
ter engaged in welfare work. One morning,
Daniel, the 14-year-old baby of the family was
missing. He never showed up again until after
the war, having followed his brothers into the
army.
Thrilling Story of Libby Goldstone
Another thrilling story is that of Libby Gold-
stone, Pittsburgh Jewess, who at the age of 88
led a Liberty Loan parade through the streets
of the city. She died three years ago at the age
of 103, the grandmother of 20 World War
Veterans. Outstanding deeds of heroism credit-
ed to the Jewish soldiers are far too numerous
to recite here. In Trenton, N. J., is a modest
comrade in our organization—one of the three
Jews to possess the Medal of Honor—Benjamin
Kaufman. The name of Battling Benjamin
Blaustein will be forever enshrined amongst the
heroes of the lighting 69th Regiment. Wherever
the story of the "Lost Battalion" is chronicled,
there must be told how, after messenger upon
messenger seeking to bring relief to the despair-
ing troops sped to certain death, it was Abie
Krotoshinsky,
a little Jewish tailor from the
Bronx, who volunteered, went through and
saved the battalion and the day. Jews have also
shown their patriotism in other than direct mili-
tary ways.
The founder of Poppy Day, the
father of Flag Day, end the woman who con-
ceived the Gold Star Mothers Association were
all Jews. Benjamin Altheimer, now 85 years of
age, gave to this country the idea of a day to
commemorate the American Flag. For many
years he fought a one-man national campaign
for Flag Day.
In 1917, President Wilson proclaimed Flag
Day, June 14, a national occasion. An accepted
part of all pre-Decoration Day observances is
the artificial poppy, symbol of the sacrifice of
those who fought in France. The proceeds of
these poppy sales go to the disabled veterans.
It was Miss Mona Michaels, a member of a
prominent Southern Jewish family, who first
thought of the idea of ,Poppy
Day, One of the
most picturesque elements of every Decoration
Day parade, if not of every veteran affair, are
the gray-haired gold-star mothers, those mothers
who lost one or more sons in the World War.
It was the late Mrs. Leah David of San Fran-
cisco, mother of Victor H. Davis, one of the
outstanding Jewish heroes of the war, who first
organized the Gold Star Mothers Association, of
which she was president until her death in 1930.
Every Jew can well be proud of our military
record. Every Jew should know that record.
When an impartial historian writes the story
of the building upt of America, Jewish names
will e found on every page. This imposing
record will record a complete answer to the
unthinking and unjust slanders upon our race.
