Coughlin — Expert on Banking
and THE LEGAL CHRONICLE
In his address in New York last week,
Rev. Charles E. Coughlin of the Shrine of
the Little Flower again gnashed his priest-
ly teeth at the bankers.
Again Coughlin mentioned names—this
time referring to Morgan, Baruch and
Warburg. We are beginning to forgive
him for harping on Baruch. After all, it
has become a mania with him. But he has
seen fit to pick on two Jews in mentioning
three bankers. He remains consistent in
singling out Jewish names when speaking
of bankers who are a menace to this coun-
try, and as long as he harps on this preju-
dice he will find it most difficult to prove
his claim that he does not harbor preju-
dice against the Jewish people.
We would be lacking in self-respect if
we were to enumerate again the oft-quoted
facts that Jews are an unimportant minor-
ity in banking circles. Rev. Coughlin has
been presented with the facts and it has
been called to his attention that he is un-
fair in harping on Jewish names and in
giving the impression that Jews are in
back of the disrupting elements in this
country.
There is a group in our ranks which be-
lieves that Jews should not defend bankers
simply because they are Jews. They ig-
nore the fact, however, that we are not de-
fending the bankers but are objecting to
constant emphasis on Jewish names to give
the impression that Jews are the domin-
ating financial element in the country and
therefore the menace to be guarded
against.
The injustice for which the Royal Oak
radio priest is responsible is evident. It
has been called to his attention but he
refuses to listen to reason and to recognize
the truth relative to facts on banking. He
insists on playing the role of an authority
on banking and will not admit having
erred. How else are we to judge him,
therefore, than by the standards which
must brand him as a bigot and a Jew-
baiter?

Q. Why are Hebrew benedic-
tions frequently interrupted by the
auditors with the saying of
"Blessed be Ile; blessed be His
Name"?—S. M. 0.
A. It is always upon mention of
the Name of God at the opening
of a benediction that this response
is uttered. This is in accordance
with a rabbinic interpretation of
the verse, "For I will proclaim the
name of the Lord; Ascribe ye
greatness unto our Lord" (Deut.
xxxi 3).

EDITOR'S NOTE: Millions of blind people are hailing Robert E. Naumburg, Jewish
scientist and inventor of the Visagraph, as their greatest benefactor because his invention
enables them to read almost anything without 'waiting for it to be "translated" into Braille.
In recogntion of this great invention Mr. Naumburg was awarded the 1935 Wetherill Medal
by the Franklin Institute of Science. Miss Slater gives us an intimate and timely portrait, of
this newest of Jewish scientists.
