Chosen President by Unani-

mous Vote; Important
Editor, Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
Last year we sent to workers
and friends of the Detroit Com-
munity Fund a series of letters
describing some of the work
which Community Fund Agencies
are doing in our city, such as the
care of orphaned and crippled
children, many health services,
work of the Legal Aid Bureau and
American Red Cross, and so on,
This year we would like to tell
you a little more about the actual
working of the Fund itself. As
business men, there must be many
questions in your minds as to the
"why" of a Community Fund.
This month we have outlined
briefly the reasons for such an
organization.
Before Detroit had a Commu-
nity Fund this was the situation:
1. Constant solicitation by 77
agencies now in the fund—tag
days and benefits with overhead
costing from 16 to 30 per cent
of money raised.
2. You would be paying out
innumerable small sums with no
idea of the relative value of the
services rendered.
3. A limited number of, citi-
zens carried the entire financial
burden.
4. Methods of accounting and
recording of services were fre-
quently haphazard and inade-
quate.
5. Many agencies with a popu-
l ar appeal were over financed
while other necessary agencies
were under financed.
With the Community Fund way
of raising money you have:
1. One systematic campaign
with one overhead totalling 5 per
cent of the money raised, (Com-
pare with "1" above.)
2. One pledge to a responsible
central organization, the board
members of which not only give
their time to supervise the use of
your contributions, but donate 25
per cent of the money raised.
3. This year 166,000 citizens
sharing the financial responsibil-
ity.
4. Strict budgeting and ac-
counting of all money raised and
spent.
6. A unified balanced program
of social work planned by re-
sponsible citizens.
Isn't the Fund way better—
with no class or race distinction,
with n planned attack on the city's
social problems by a trustworthy
group of which you yourselves
are a part, responsible for doing
an efficient, economical and in-
telligent job?

and Business
The Yeshiva College of liberal
arts and science of New York, an-
nounces the formation of a depart-
ment of commerce and business, to
lead to the degree of Bachelor of
Science in Business Administra-
tion. Dr. Bernard Revel, president
of the College, declares that many
inquiries have demonstrated the
need for such a school, which seeks
to prepare young men for the
world of business affairs and man-
agement in the lofty spirit that
has marked the progress of the
college itself.
The new department will thus
combine an effective training in
business and commercial practice
with the most meritorious Jewish
cultural and spiritual trontacts. It
will strive to carry the Ideals and
practices of Judaism into the cite-
dela of lay existence.
