Should Jews become leaders in
radical movements, or should they
remain in the background?
Dr. Bernard !teller, director of
the Billet Foundation of the Uni-
versity of Michigan, has an in-
teresting viewpoint on the sub-
ject.
The question on which Dr.
Heller makes comment is particu-
larly important at this time, in
view of the prominent role that
was played by Jews in the anti-
war demonstrations. His inter-
eating statement follows:
effective,
Idealism, to be

must be coupled with prudence.
Our visions may be lofty, but
unless we take cognizance of
the best means to accomplish
our desired ends and manifest
■ consideration for the conse-
quences that may be involved
in the alternative techniques
that may lie before us, than
our idealism will never attain
to reality, or if it does, it will
be at
• an uncalled for cost.
Jewish students who are in-
clined to be radical in their so-
cial, political and economic
philosophy ought, It seems to
me, to ponder a great deal over
this bit of practical wisdom. I
hope I will not be misunder•
stood as exhorting the student
with deep and sincere convic•
lions to abjure those convic-
tions out of regard for expedi-
ency or a fear of the oppro-
brium of those who differ from
them. If one feels that he
must be radical, by all means
let him be radical. Nor do I
wart h:m to be • clandestine or
a "marrano" type of radical.
What distresses me, however, is
the tendency of these Jewish
students to protrude themselves
to the leadership or forefront
of such groups. If their devo-
tion be • selfless devotion to
• cause, the possibilities of that
cause attracting certain individ-
uals to it Would be much great-
er of the apostles with Jewish
names would follow in the
ranks rather than persist in lie-
ing at the head of the move-
ment.
Furthermore, there is • ten-
dency on the part of advocates
of radicalism to be a little in-
considerate and unmindful of
the sincerity of those maintain-
ing ■ an opposite point of view.
Whether that be the result of
certain up-bringing or intense
zeal, I cannot tell, When Jews
are at the helm, the inevitable
consequence of such zeal is an
increase in anti-Semitism.
The possible retort of the
Jewish radical that his de-
meanor is his own affair is not
exactly true, for Jews do suf.
for by each other's actions.
There are many who are dis-
posed to see in the desire of
Jews to be at the head and the
helm of such movements a pro-
pensity to exhibitionism. One
may not agree with such • ver-
sion. It should, however, im-
pel many of as to • greater
degree of self-analysis and a
more rigorous scrutiny of our
motivations.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

By MILTON BROWN

(Copyright, 1534, Jewtah Telegraphk Avner. 1.•)

GERMANY

The hope that the Jews had
placed in Dr. Schacht, the Reich
minister of economics, turned into
a mere illusion when a secret order
was issued to all Nazi district lead-
ers in Germany to mobilize their
form against Jews in commerce.
This order is already being carried
out in Bavaria where the Jewish
population has decreased by 10,-
000 since the last census. Win-
dows of Jewish shops in Munich,
the capital of Bavaria, were paint-
ed last week by Nazis with anti-
Jewish slogans calling upon the
Aryan population to boycott Jewish
firms.
Failing in his job in Danzig,
Minister Goebbels, the Nazi min-
ister of propaganda, last week re-
sumed his activitits on the anti-
Jewish front. An order issued by
the Reich press chamber under his
instructions gives three months'
notice to all Jewish publications in
Germany to liquidate. The Ger-
man-Jewish press, which hitherto
the Nazis regarded with contempt
as a "ghetto press," may thus dis-
appear entirely from the scene, if
the negotiations now started by
Jewish leaders to save it do not
prove successful.
An order forbidding Jewish lead-
ers to refer to Germany as their
Fatherland in their public speeches,
was also one of the edicts issued by
Goebbels. Martin Buber, the Jew-
ish philosopher and one of the most
important Jewish spiritual leaders
in Germany was prohibited by the
Ministry of Propaganda to deliver
any public speeches.
The Ministry of Posts in Ger-
many issued an order prohibiting
the carrying in the mails of any
books written by Jews or any ad-
vertisements of such books, thus
completing the drive against the
Jewish printed word.

creased search for land the Jet,
would have long eine, bought qq
the Sarona territory. The liermai
residing there, however, under Nazi
instructions, hav'e given their wad
that they would not sell their land
to Jews.
In order to prevent the further
sale of Arab land to Jews, the (ed.
ernmcnt of Palestine annourred the
establishment of an agriculturel
bank. This bank will grant lung
term loans almost exclusively ts
Arabs in order to enable them to
hold on to their land.
Addressing the Farmer Day celu
bration in Palestine last week, the
High Commissioner made it eke
that he is highly interested ia
helping the Arab landowners end
that loans would be granted to then
by the bank at very low rates. Te
establishment of the Agri:111MA
Bank is one of the features whir•/
is far from arousing enthusiasm
among the Jews.
The High Commissioner id Pale.
