their subjection to "the exquisite
cruelty of handling food which
they are not allowed to eat —
carrying sheaves while racked
with hunger, trending the wine-
press while suffering thirst."
This is only one example of the
Biblical ideal of social justice
that Dr. Ephraim Frisch, San An-
tonio, Texas, cites in his new tract
"Philanthropy in the Biblical
Era." Rabbi Louis I. Egelson,
Cincinnati, secretary of the Tract
Commission of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
announces the appearance of the
new tract, the 23rd published by
the Union.
The tract can be described as
the "Biblical Source for the New
Iii •il," although it was actually
written before the term "New
Dent" had become a catchword,
because as Dr. Frisch shows, the
ideals for philanthropy today so
closely resemble the teachings of
the prophets.
Dr. Frisch points out that the
Jews introduced two new ele-
ments into the work of philan-
thropy, ethical fervor combined
with the recognition of charity as
• universal obligation. Ile shows
how the biblical writers had a
profound interest in the welfare
of the poor and the defenseless.
The tract is available for free
distribution.
