The first reaction to this answer was to smile over the naivete of a man who is professionally rated very high. But on i second thought the reaction was one of pity. Here is a man who has been de- prived of his rights as a citizen and as a professional man who has for years served the best interests of his country. Now he is a refugee, primarily because he is a Jew. But he still continues to gain nour- ishment from a superior patriotism and fails to realize that he cannot escape his Jewishness and that he is aggravating his own tragedy by his continued efforts to forget his Jewish ancestry. If he had a little less Jewish blood and a little more Aryan blood in his veins, this man would have been spared the indigni- ties of becoming an exile. Therefore, in- stead of recognizing his lineage he con- tinues to couch his explanation in words and phrases to emphasize Germanism, to hide Hebraism. This, perhaps, is a great- 1er tragedy than exile: that a man is un- able to find satisfaction in the strength of ' his natural lineage at a time when his adopted country rejects and humiliates him. An ancient tale repeats itself. Three `dimes in succession the notorious Julius Streicher, Germany's most bigoted anti- Semite, published special issues of his vituperative "Der Sturmer" in which he charges the Jewish people with being the murderers of the Lindbergh baby and with having used the blood* of the infant for ritual purposes. Of interest in this connection is the fact that the German accused of the murder and the extortion of the ransom money, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, is also trying to implicate a Jew and that insofar as the innocent masses of Germans are con- cerned, it is the Jews again who are re- Jabotinsky in the United States sponsible for every vice, every crime, and Vladimir Jabotinsky's arrival in this every one of the world's ills. country on Thursday may or may not be Of course, murder will 'out and the en- 'a signal for a Revisionist-Laborite battle. tire truth will be known before long, Nevertheless the air is already charged once again shaming the perverted leaders with tense feeling, and it is to be hoped of Nazi Germany. MORDECAI NUROK (PLEASE TURN TO NEXT PAGE) ------- EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is the text of the address delivered by Dr. Hurok on Jan. 17, at • reception in hi. honor arranged by the American Jewish Congress. Dr. Nurok ie a, distinguished European leader, formerly chief rabbi of Latvia, and for many years a member of the Latvian Government. He i sa member of the Zionist Actions Committee, the Admin• i ..... ire Committee of the Jewish Agency, and of the Executive Committee for the World Jewish Congress. N OT IN THE past several hundred years have the Jews of Europe found them- selves in the precarious position they are in today. A somewhat similar fate confronted them at the beginning of the World War, when the Grand Duke Nicolai Nicolaivitch, uncle of the late Czar, caused the expulsion of thousands of Jews from their homes on the borderland. But then there was the consolation and hope that the outcome of the war would bring them freedom, since it was believed that the minority nationals everywhere would be granted the right to self-determination. The very fact that in the World War Russia allied itself with the democracies of France, England, and latterly also of America, tended to strengthen the be- lief that the redemption of the Jews in the lands of the Galut was near at hand. Indeed, at the beginning it seemed as though the hope would be fulfilled. Thanks to this historical intercession of the Committee of Jew- ish Delegations in Paris, there were written into the Peace Treaties clauses which guaranteed the political-national rights of all minority peoples. We, the Jewish parliamentarians, in collaboration with the Paris Committee headed by the late Dr. Leon Motzkin, continued to press our demand for the protection of Jewish rights. At the Con- gresses of the minority groups which met at Geneva we succeeded to rally about that de- mand sonic 40,000,000 people, and the Jewish question, was always prominently placed at these congresses. We have likewise utilized in our struggle the League of the Friends of the League of Nations. We have left those con- gresses only when the Nazis entered them. Process of Elimination of Jews Soon, however, conditions began to change for the worse. The freedom slogans of the war period were all forgotten, and dark reaction be- gan to lift its head. From Hitler's Germany a Our Musical Heritage By CANTOR AARON I. EDGAR EDITOR'S NOTE: Cantor Edgar, the autho r of this article, i s now serving • congregation in Des Moines, la. He is a former De. troiter and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. wave of anti-Semitism struck the whole of Eu- rope. The erstwhile freedom mottos were re- placed by such as "Back to Medievaldom." "Down with Emancipation" and the like. As for the Jews, everything since tended to drag his- tory back to the Dark Ages. The policy of discrimination and persecu- tion against the Jews is today carried out every- where relentlessly, whether it is being done crudely, with ax in hand, or under cover, with gloved hands. Not only are Jews robbed of their freedom and citizen rights, but their very existence is being undermined. Jews are being thrown out from all the responsible positions which they had with their own sweat and blood helped to mate. The cruel irony of the situation is that the beginning of the process of the elimination of the Jew began already with the post-war period, when the world was rebuilding the waste places caused by the war, and all the historical achieve- ments of the Jews in the realms of the arts, literature, science, economy, commerce and in- dustry, were as though forgotten. The economic policy of the several Euro- pean nations leads to the total annihilation of the Jew through the creation of state monopo- lies, co-operatives, where Jews are not employed, and the promulgation of such special rules and regulations for the carrying on of import-export trade as the Jew is unable to meet. Bound Up With Cause of Democracy Equally ruthless is the policy to eliminate the Jew- from the free professions, such as medi- cine, law, engineering and architecture. The physicians are unceremoniously thrown out from the city hospitals, thus cutting them off from gov- ernment subsidy. Not since the publication of Marian King's "Ammon, a Lad of Palestine" (Houghton Mif- linCo.) have we been favored with as fine and positively thrilling story for children as "Yossele 's Holiday." Non-Jewish children will find an great an interest in "Yos- sele's Holiday" as will their Jewish friends. But for the Jewish boy and girl this book is a veritable treasure. Primarily, this is the story of family life. In addition, it is an excellent illustration of the manner in which a Jewish holi- day is observed and how the past in Jewish history is made real and is caused to pulsate with life when taught to the child at home. Yossele is a little boy in a little Russian village. His school hours are from 8 to 8, and on winter nights lanterns are need- ed to illuminate the way home through the dark streets that have no lights. On their way home on these cold dark nights, under the watch of the behel- fer (the author's use of the term "heifer" is rather erron- eous), they sing school songs, and the neighbors have a signal of the return of the children to their homes. It is the season of the Feast of the Maccabees, and Yossele comes home on this particular night to find his mother polish- ing the Chanukah lamp. On the first night of Chanukah, Yossele's grandparents come, bring him gifts—boots, a round hat of lamb fur and a dress coat. Grandfather places Yos- sele on his knee and corn- ( PLEASE TURN TO NEXT PAGE ) a By ALEPH KATZ Wuprright. 1131. J. T. A. Is (JTA Bawled Correspondent) COHEN ON JUDAISM Prof. Morris Cohen, the noted City College philosopher, was one of the speakers at the recent wel- fare conference in New York. To this reporter, his address was the highlight of the four-day session. But even more interesting was the discussion which followed his ad- dress. Professor Cohen feels that Jews are people first, and only Jews in- cidentally. Ile does not believe that because one is a Jew, that one has a special mission in life; neither does he believe that the Jews, as a people, have to justify their ex- istence. To his mind, one doesn't have to be militantly Jewish to be a Jew. Further, one doesn't have to be an active member of the Jew- ish communitf. A man who makes his mark in the world, he seems to say, can be a better Jew without participating in Jewish affairs than the professional Jew for whom he has an ill-concealed scorn. When a questioner from the floor took the point that Professor Cohen espoused a negative form of Judaism, and asked the professor to express his views on a positive form of Judaism, the professor threw a bombshell into the audi- ence when he said there is no such thing as Judaism. To be exact, he said: "I do not believe there is any such thing as Judaism. I do not believe there is an abstract doc- trine—which is what an 'ism' is upon which all Jews can agree. If you ask me, what is Judaism, I don't know. And I must frankly say that I doubt whether anyone here can tell me. I have heard many definitions of Judaism and they're all shallow." The professor then went on to show that there is no particular quality of the Jew that is not to be found in any other people. 13y asking: Does this particular qual- ity when found in a Moslem make him a Jew? The professor illus- trated that he could tear down any definition of a Jew offered to him. Further he made the point that Jews throughout their lifetime Jews in Lithuani Two repor‘s—a saddenin g about the present position of Jews in Lithuania and an em aging one about the activitie s plans of the Yiddish Scientific stitute—were brought Am er Jewry by Judl Mark, editor I Kaunas Folksblatt and membc the philological section of th e stitute, who is here on his visit to America.
