JERUSALEM. (JTA) — Two
brilliant students exiled from
Germany graduated last week
with high honors from the He-
brew University in Jerusalem.
Seventeen men received the de-
gree of Master of Arts, compris-
ing the fourth graduating class
in the history of the institution,
which recently began its tenth
year.
The two German Jews are Max
Schiffer and Raphael Artzi. Schif-
fer, who was refused a diploma
on the eve of his graduation from
the University of Berlin last year,
is one of a group of former Ger-
man students supported by a
grant from the Central British
Fund.
Artzi formerly attended the
University of Koenigsberg.

The Junior Chapter of the Eva
Prenzlauer Maternity Aid is
sponsoring a membership drive,
starting on Jan. 1, and ending
Feb. 29. All girls between the

21st Contest Jan. 2

Six Contestants Vie for August
and Morse Medals; Debate
Women Champions Sunday

The 21st annual oratorical con-
test of the Philomathic Debating
Club will take place Thursday
evening, Jan. 3, at 8:15, at Cen-
tral High School, Tuxedo and
Linwood. Melvin Gerson, Leo-
pold Snyder, Jack Behrmann, Ar-
nold Sharkey, Louis Elkind and
Saul Greenberg will speak in the
contest. As annually since 1914,
■ gold medal will be awarded by ,
Herman August and a silver
medal by Maurice Morse to the
best and second best speakers re-
spectively. A large turnout of
alumni and friend., of the Philo-
mathic is expected at this affair,
which will be open to the public.
A precedent will be net to in-
augurate a fortnight of intensive
Philomathic activity, when an all.
woman team, sophomore debating ,
champions of Wayne University
and finalist in the intramural
tournament now being held there,
will debate a Philomathic team'
at their next meeting, Sunday,!
Dec. 30. The women, Pauline
Fried and Sietelle Fish, will op-
pose Leopold Snyder and Phillip
Leeman on the question, "Re.,
solved, that the United States,
government control and regulate ,
the munitions industry within its
borders." This debate, which Is
also open to the public, will take ,
place at - Congregation Shaarey
Zedek at 3 p. m. Sunday, Dec. 30,
and another large attendance is
expected.
On Jan. 12, a Philomathic team
consisting of Phillip Leeman, I
Julian Caplan and Saul Shiefman
will engage a Shaarey Zedek team
on the question, "Resolved, that'
the Jews of America have failed
in their moral and financial ob-
ligation to world Jewry," in the
first round of the Jewish Foren- ,
sic League.
