Hadassah Birthday
Fund Inaugurated
A new idea is now being po-
pularized by Detroit chapter of
liadassah. It is called the birth-
day celebration fund, and its pur-
pose is to further the work of
providing daily noon lunches for
over 4,500 Palestinian school
children, from kindergarten age
up.
Instead of purchasing gifts for
children, many parents and friends
are contributing to this fund on
birthday occasions, thereby teach-
ing American children to share
their pleasures and comforts with
other children not as well situ-
ated, for, notwithstanding the fact
that at present there is no un-
employment problem in Palestine,
hundreds of families still live on
a bare subsistence and their child-
ren come to school pitifully un-
derfed, after a breakfast of dry
bread and tea, with not much
more in prospect for supper. They
depend upon Iladassah for their
main meal at noon. Despite its
low cost, the school meal is re-
markably good, well balanced and
varied. This is attested to not
only by the children but by re-
turning American tourists. In ad-
dition to the physical good accom-
plished, the preparation of the
meal serves as a basis for teach-
ing cooking, nutrition and house-
hold economy.
Each American child whose
birthday is honored by a gift to
the School Luncheons Fund should
consider himself or herself as hav-
ing tendered a birthday party to
a group of Palestinian children. A
gift of $1.00 provides lunches for
ten children, while $5.00 is suffi-
cient to buy lunches for a child
for an entire year. A charming
card of acknowledgment is sent to
the child whose birthday is thus
being celebrated. Mrs. Samuel
Schaflander, 1154 Burlingame
Ave., is chairman of this fund
and will be glad to cooperate with
all participants. She announces re-
cent birthday gifts as follows:
Mrs. Sam Berman, honoring Jud-
ith Ann Isenberg; Mrs. A. J. Prus-
sin, honoring Seymour Goldberg
of Toronto; Mrs. Abe Srere, hon-
oring her daughter, Beth Elaine;
Mrs. Henry N. Weinstein, honor-
ing her daughter, Faga Beth; Mrs.
Sam Berman, honoring Audrey
Klein.
SABOINE CLUB
The Saboine Club has been act-
ively engaged in a charitable pro-
gram, and recently contributed
$10 to the Detroit Jewish Welfare
Federation. A basket consisting of
poultry and groceries was given
to a needy family.

VIENNA (JTA)—Austria's new 1.7,

trade laws, in full effect last week, i.l
completely deprived 10,000 Jewish
salesmen, canvassers and itinerant
merchants and their families of
their means of livelihood by for-
bidding them to call on customers
to take orders. The decrees bar
several branches of trade in which
the Jews had been heavily repre-
sented.
House-to-house salesmen no lon-
ger are permitted to solicit new
business even when calling on old
customers to collect installments
on previous sales.
Seven thousand Jewish repre-
sentatives of clothing and textile
concerns are particularly hit by
the decree. Three thousand Jew-
ish salesmen of commodities used I
in the homes are also affected.
The decree strikes a crushing
blow at the small instalment houses
which are effectually debarred
from collecting old debts from non-
Jewish clients. j
