goes to Shemarya, whose plucked
red beard was responsible for
his transformation, and pleads for
forgiveness. lie returns for atone-
ment to Koropta, and to die.
This simple tale concludes with
the
conversation between
a
stranger who passes the grave
marked "Colonel Nicholas Tera-
bits, A Guest on Earth," and the
inn-keeper, Nathan Kristianpoller,
who likes to relate to his guests
the story of Tarabas. Asked
whether the Jews are no longer
afraid, Kristianpoller, — clever
man the author calls him—says:
"People forget. They forget
fear and they forget the terrors
that they gm through. They want
to live at all costs; they make
themselves get used to everything,
because they want to live! It is
quite simple. Even miracles, even
the most extraordinary things—
they adapt them, too, quioker
seven than the everyday ones. For
the everyday is what they want.
Bee it yourself, sir—at the end
of every life stands death. We
all know it. And who remembers
it?"
Perhaps in this bit of philoso-
phy lies the answer to the man-
ner in which Jews cling to life
even after most horrible massa-
cres and persecutions.
"Tarabas," simple but great
story, is told by a master writer.
Joseph Roth, Russian-Jewish, stu-
dent in Vienna University, having
served in the war, was captured
by the Ukrainians after the war,
but fled to Vienna. There he be-
came a journalist. He now lives
in Paris and his books are pub-
lished in An sterdam.

A Torgsin Order

f

vexing problems, was proposed last
Friday by Vladimir Jabotinsky ,
leader of the Zionist Revisionists,
in a statement to the press.
"Three separate agreements to
achieve peace have already been
negotiated, thanks to the devoted
work of Pinchus Rutenberg," Mr.
Jabotinsky declared. The only
definite result achieved, however,
has been the cessation of physical
violence and indecent methods of
party strife, which the Revisionist
groups have already ratified al-
though other groups have not act-
ed as yet.
"Two other agreements were
signed in London," Mr. Jabotinsky
stated.
"1. One establishes a modus vi-
vendi between the two Palestine
labor organizations. The Revision-
ist national-labor groups have al-
ready ratified this agreement,
while the Histadruth, the Central
Labor Federation of Palestine, will
shortly discuss ratification at to
conference.
"2. A' provisional non-aggres-
alonel pact which does away with
reprisals on both sides, including
the decree on immigration certifi-
cates for the Brith Trumpeldor,
suspension of the Revisionist boy-
cott on Zionist funds and the end
of protests against the Jewish
Agency for Palestina monopoly on
immigration certificates. This will
smooth the way for further nego-
tiations on a policy of a united
front and for common constructive
work in Palestine.
"Further confidential negotia-
tions are still going on, but the
only details which ran be revealed
are the ones I have spoken of.
"All reports such as the ones
stating that, the Revisionists are
recognizing the discipline called
for by the Prague Zionist Congress,
the story of a coalition executive
with Dr. Chaim Weizmann as
president and a Revisionist vice-
president and reports that the Na-
tional Labor organization will
coalesce with the Ilistadruth, are
all foolish rumors and merely hin-
der negotiations.
"An agreement requires an ac-
cord which jibes with the princi-
ples of both parties. The Laborites
will not accept an agreement viola-
ing its principles and neither will
the Revisionists. A modus vivendi
is possible only with goad will on
both sides which we are honestly
endeavoring to bring about.
"Any news of further agreement
will be made public by Mr. Ruten-
berg as soon as news is received.
"Direct negotiations are held on
issues which directly affect Labor-
ites and Revisionist!, but a round
table discussion is essential on the
general problems," the Revisionist
leader said.
