Reich Applies New Pressure
Against Jews

LONDON.—(JTA) — Further
evidence that the economic screw
is being-tightened against German
Jewry by the exclusion of "non-
Aryans" from a number of pro-
fessions is presented by the Lon-
don Times in a column-long art-
icle dated from Berlin.
Asserting that 10,000 Jews
have recently been deprived of
the chance to earn a livelihood in
Germany, the article points out
that the recent tendency to as-
sume that the effects of the anti-
Semitic legislation of the Nazis
have been exaggerated (the as-
sumption being based on the fact
that Dr. Iljalmar Schacht, Minis-
ter of Economics, discourages in-
terference with Jews in com-
merce) is misleading. Dr.
Schacht's measures, the article
declares. were taken merely to
prevent disturbance of the econo-
mic life of Germany.

A postal card mailed in Wilna
then Czarist Russia, 20 years ago
almost at the beginning of the
World War and addressed to Hiss
to its old address, 229 East Broad
way, was delivered to the Socie
ty a new offices, 425 Lafayette
St., New York City, a week ago.
The card was sent by Bertha An
and was intended for Samuel Asch
254 East Houton St. New York.
This card of two decades ago
will refresh the memories of large
numbers of American Jews who
will recall the achievement of
Hies immediately after the out-
break of the terrible conflict. The
German-Austrian occupation of
Russian provinces, disrupted com-
pletely the means of communica-
tion between the Jews in those
territories and their relatives in
America. With the consent of the
then American government, Hies
sent a special commissioner to the
German - Austrian governments
and their chief commanders to
establish some plan of operation
whereby the Jews in the occupied
provinces could somehow or other
communicate with their people in
this country. Isidore Hershfield,
who is now the Hiss representa-
tive in Washington, was that cam.
m Wiener.
