BAZAAR IZ O N In his address over his Jewish Radio Hour last Sunday, Hyman Altman urged the community to support the annual bazaar of the Detroit Auxiliary of the Los An- geles Sanatorium, to be held at the B'nai Moshe for a period of 10 days, beginning with Dec. 1. Mr. Altman urged a unified ef- fort in behalf of the Los Angeles Sanatorium, and deplored the ex- istence of some divisions in the ranks. Speaking in behalf of County Clerk Elmer O'Hara, Mr. Altman thanked the Jewish voters for giving Mr. O'Hara such splendid support at the last election. This Sunday's hour, broadcast from 12 noon to 1:30 p. m. over Station WMBC, will mark the end of the fifth year of Mr. Altman's broadcasts in behalf of many charitable enterprises as well as business houses. Mr. Altman will celebrate his anniversary with a special broad- cast on Sunday, Dec. 2, when a number of leaders will speak. His business hour will be postponed to Monday evening, Dec. 3. All Jew- ish veterans of the World War are eligible to join. At the Jest meeting, 10 new members were accepted. M. Waterstone, chairman of the membership committee, stated this week; "There is no reason why every ex-soldier should not avail him- self of this opportunity to join the Rosenwald Post. It is a Jew- ish post for Jewish veterans, an organization which should become an important factor in Detroit Jewish community affairs. "l'lans are being made whereby every charitable institution will gain from the fruits of our la- bors. Any ex-service man who is out of work will be helped. Sick or deceased veterans' families will also be provided for. These are just a few of the many things Julius Rosenwald Post stands for and will do, with the aid of all Jewish veterans. No one should stay away. Every ex-service man should be a Legionnaire. ' The dues are very small. Besides, we have many parties, social meet- ings with prominent speakers and entertainers. His sub- ject will be "The Present Crisis in , Civilization." For nearly a decade the author of "Upstream", "Mid-Channel" and "Expression in America" has lived and traveled through Europe and the Near East. He has just returned to America to settle here permanently, and he brings to the Town Hall audience the fruits of bis observations in a message of vital interest. In his lecture, Mr. Lewisohn will discuss the present crisis—its aymptona and its causes. In order to understand why the crisis oc- cessions the growth of new fans- ticiams such as the Pagan revolt of the neo-nationalists or the mil- itant atheism of the Communists, he believes that the fundamental questions must be faced — and answered—intelligently and fear- lessly. Except for his European visits, Ludwig Lewisohn has lived his life in America, where the im- portance of his contribution to American thought and letters is widely recognized. Born in Ber- lin, he was brought to Carolina by his parents at the age of eight. During his early years of author- ship he served on the faculty of several leading universities. In 1919, he joined the staff of The Nation as dramatic editor, and la- ter became associate editor. Many of Lewisohn's books have been translated into 15 languages —"The Case of Mr. Crump," "The Island Within," "The Last Days of Shylock" and "This People." "An Altar in the Fields" is another of his famous books. Tickets for Mr. Lewisohn's lec- ture may be had now at Grinnell's or from Monday to Wednesday at the Fisher Box Office. This first production, spon- sored by the Detroit Symphony So- ciety and the Detroit Civic Opera, will be directed by Ossip Gabrilo- witach and promises to be one of the most brilliant events this emin- ent artist has ever given here. Distinguished artists, steeped in in the Wagnerian tradition, will be presented in the leading roles. Elsa Allen, the Isolde, was a leading member of the successful Wagner- ian Opera Company which toured this country and played to a week's engagement in Detroit a few sea- sons back. She has also been heard here in operatic arias from the Wagner works as soloist with the symphony. One of her outstanding performances is in this title role of Isolde. Paul Althouse, who will be heard in the tenor role of Tristan has had a distinctive record as a Wag- ner interpreter with the Philadel- phia Civic Opera and the Chicago Opera. Just recently he appeared with the Cleveland Symphony in the production of "The Valkyrie" directed by Artur Rodzinski, win- ning acclaim as Siegmund. His handling of the exacting role of Tristan is said to be equally im- pressive. Margaret Matzenauer, the popu- lar Metropolitan contralto, cast as Brangaene has long been a favor- ite here as is also Fred Patton the dependable baritone who will be heard in the role of Kurvenal. Special interest attaches to the appearance of Chase Baromeo, the former Detroiter, who has made such an outstanding success with the Chicago Civic Opera. This fin- ished bass singer is said to give a magnificent account of himself in the role of King Marke. The artists arrive in Detroit this Sunday to begin rehearsals with the local forces Monday. The Civic Opera chorus, trained by Thaddeus Wronski, will provide the background for their admirable work, talented local singers also singing the minor parts in the opera.
