BOSTON.— A new method for
diagnosing stomach and intestinal
cancer in the earliest stages has
been developed and used in several
thousand cases at the Massa-
chusetts General Hospital here.
At the same time Dr, R. D. Mc-
Clure and Dr. A. B. McGraw of the
Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, read
at the American College of Sur-
geons meeting here a paper in
which they told of the treatment of
479 cancer cases, 142 of the pa-
tients recovering after five years
and 30 more recovering after 10
years.
The cancer diagnosis was re-
' veiled by Dr. Robert G. Vance,
visiting radiologist at the Massa-
chusetts Hospital. Doctor Vance
stated:
This new method of observing
whether cancer has started in the
, stomach was originated in Ger-
; many by Doctor Berg. One of his
disciples, R. Schatzki, a Jewish
political refugee from the Hitler
regime, came to Boston and aided
us in improving upon Berg's work.
"By making the patient swallow
la thick cream-like meal of barium
' sulphate, and immediately after-
wards massaging his abdomen, we
are able to coat the inner lining
, of the stomach walls or membrane
with this barium sulphate paste.,
When X-rays are thrown upon the
stomach they make the membrane
grow."

AN ENGROSSING STORY

Sarah Gertrude Millie's "Three
Men Die" Is Great Novel

and fashion

. „

THREE MEN IIIE. By Sarah Gertrude
Millis. Published by Harper • Brea,
New York MIS).

Having established her reputa-
tion as a novelist with "God's
Stepchildren," "The Fiddler" and
other novels, Mrs. t1,“ recently
enhanced her staneivis as an au-
thor with her bior.spi•y of Cecil
Rhodes. Now she returns to
story-telling with "Three Men
Die,' and her latest achievement
is the creation of a novel whieh
must add many readers to the
large following she has gained in
the past few years.
"Three Men Die" is the work
of an artist who knows how to
attract the interest of the reader
in the first few pages and to hold
it throughout. You can't lay
down this book once you have
started to read it. There is n o
better compliment that can b e
given this book. The story run
so smoothly and absorbingly tha t
the reader will grateful for it.
It is the story of the courag
eons Julia Taplin, who is unemo
tional and unmoving, but whoa
personality as pictured by Mrs
Millie captivates the reader be
cause of her outward niceties an
respectability and her strivin
for security.
