An Appeal to the Jewish Commun ty
In Behalf of Detroit Community Fund

By HENRY WINEMAN
Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Jewish
Welfare Federation

The fate of our social service agencies is in the hands
of those who are fortunate enough to be in the giving rather
than the receiving end of our population.
As we approach the annual campaign of the Detroit
Community Fund we entertain the hope that those who are
position to give will be liberal in acyfirdance with their means,
and that they will not shirk
their responsibilities.
To the Jews of Detroit
our appeal at this time as-
sumes an element of special
importance.
In the first. place, we are
obligated to make ,liberal
gifts to the Fund as citi-
zens. It is a community
debt we owe annually, and
as citizens of this commu-
nity we must show our
worth by contributing spon-
taneously and wholehearted-
ly towards the support of
our city's social and recrea•
tional agencies.
But there is also a direct
appeal, which must move
every Jewish citizen to be
doubly liberal in his gifts.
If our dependent children
are to be given the care they
need, through the Jewish

Child Placement Bureau and
the Jewish Children's Home, then the Community Fund drive
must be enabled to raise its entire quota when the campaign
starts on Monday. If the many hundreds of Jewish families
that have been affected by the depression are to continue to
receive help and guidance from the Jewish Social Service
Bureau, then we must prove our liberality by our contribu-
tions to the Community Fund. It our health agency—the
North End Clinic—le to continue to function uninterruptedly,
then we must not shirk our responsibility to the Fund. If
our boys and girls, our young men and young women, are to
have suitable social and recreational facilities, then the Com-
. munity Fund must be enabled to receive its full quota in the
drive. If the lens fortunate are to be enabled to make them-
selves self-supporting, then the Ilebrew Free Loan Associa-
tion must be provided with necessary funds, and the only
assurance for that is to make the Community Fund drive a

For the 17th consecutive slear,

funds to support the 77 agencies
which make up Detroit's social
service program. This year's
quota is ;2,600,000.
Included among the 77 agen-
cies are six Important Jewish
causes—Hebrew Free Loan As-
eociation, Jewish Child Placement
Bureau, Jewish Children's Home,
Jewish Community Center, Jew-
ish Social Service Bureau and the
North End Clinic.
Conducted on a non-partisan
basin, the Community Fund drive
has a general appeal, and the
canvass will be conducted on a
citywide scale.
