Shaarey Zedek Beadle to Observe Anniversary in October; Has Had Long and Interesting Career as Merchant and Communal Leader A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU! Fish, Frog, Chicken and Steak Dinners By SAUL SHIEFMAN This October, Hirsch Alper will observe his tenth anniversary as "shames" or beadle of Congrega- tion Shaarey Zedek. Mr. Alper has been accorded a prestige greater than that of the ordinary "shames" and has in his Season's Greetings to All FUR COATS retail tobacco business on Broad- way. This undertaking prospered and grew and for 13 years was Mr. Alper's livelihood. In 1913, Mrs. Alper died, leaving her husband with eight children, ranging in ages from 3S5 to lit years. Ile re- tired from business to devote him- self to the raising of his family. The funds which had ben accumu- lated in his business were exhaus- ted after a time and Mr. Alper then became the communal kosher butcher of New York's famous orthodox congregation, the Kehil- lath Jeshurun. At America's entrance into the world war, a son of Mr. Alper had I established a canteen and army I store outside the U. S. army camp at Newport News, Virginia. He , was soon drafted into service and it became necessary for his father to take over the conduct of the business. Here Mr. Alper achieved the distinction of being the only Jew in the United States permit- ted to go in the lines to deal with the soldiers. It was in 1919. A Spanish in- fluenza epidemic was ravaging the country, making no exception of Newport News, Virginia. Here a double calamity befell Mr. Al- per. Not only did his children suc- cumb to the flu (they all pulled through) but no severely did the disease attack the soldiers there that the entire camp was quaran- tined, thereby almost ruining the Alper canteen. Mr. Alper had be- come an universal favorite with the officers and men because of the manner in which he conducted his business, and had moreover three sons in the service. Be- cause of these considerations, the commanding officer of the camp Issued to him a passport permit- ting him to go within the camp to deal with the soldiers, the only Jew in the entire United States thus honored. In the following year Mr. Alper became a partner with his son and several other men in an amuse- ment enterprise in Detroit, and made his home here for the first time. One of the partners in the business ran oft' with all of the firm's money to Mexico, leaving the others stranded. At this time , Abraham Joseph Rubiner, father of Judge Charles Rubiner, retired as beadle of Congregation Beth Jehudah to go into business. The cantor of Beth Jehudah, the Rev. A. L. Ruttman, had been the can- tor of the Kehillath Jeshurun Sy- nagogue when Mr. Alper had been its butcher and he secured his election to fill the post vacated by Mr. Rubiner. Mr. Alper served in this position until 1924, when Mr. Smith, "shames" of the Shea- rey Zedek, became blind and he was elected as his successor. In 1931 the congregation discon- tinued the hiring of a rabbi to in- struct its worshippers in the Tal- mud. Mr. Alper, a man of scholar- ly attainments, undertook himself to fulfill this time-honored obliga- tion and has done so for the past three years with astonishing suc- cess. Lean and erect, with white hair and trim white beard, all his life a Shomer Shabos, Mr. Alper re- fleets in his person the dignity that is his because of a long and eventful life of piety and merit. A man who so unostentatiously fills so important a position In the Jewish community deserves to be better known to the members of that community. Born in Grodno Gubernie, in Russia, in 1865, Mr. Alper will shortly be observing his 70 birth- day. He came to this country in 1891, settling in Boston, where he peddled. In 1896, he brought his family to America and upon fail- ure to become acclimated he returned with them to Europe in the following year. He re- mained in the old country only a few months, however, and the year 1898 saw him established in Cape Town, Union of South Africa, as a general merchant. In 1900, the year of the Boer War in South Africa, Mr. Alper returned to this country, settling once more in Boston. Here, Mr. Alper formed with a brother a partnership for the man- ufacture of silk waists, an enter- prise that did not succeed. "Rowena, Teena, Tot and the Blackberries," by Fannie Burg- helm Bluinberg, with illustrations by Mary Grosjean, was just pub- . lished by the Albert Whitman & Co., 560 W. Lake St., Chicago, , Ill. ($1). Here is a story of such unusual merit that it earns commendation, and is highly recommended for young readers of 6 to 8. Mrs. Blumberg was inspired to write this story by a colored fam- ily. The daughter is the Rowena of this story, and Old Rosie (the horse) and the surrey are also based on actual experiences with the quaint inspirers of our author. The blackberry-picking incident of the story—with the tragic spil- ling of the berries when the youngsters go off with Old Rosie —is another actual fact experi- enced by this family and recorded for the young readers in this fine book. Making her home near Terre Haute, Ind., Mrs. Blumberg is the mother of four children. She has been a devoted student of child- ren's books and has gathered a model home library for her little ones. She has had a number of stories published In magazines and her best known bookie "The First Circus." Mary Grosjean (Adams), the artist, lives in Rochester, N. Y. After graduating from college, she spent five years teaching art. Later she extended her art studies in Europe; and returned to the Art Institute In Chicago where she remained for four years as ea Instructor in children's classes and as a student of painting and etch- ing. Mrs. Adams says, "Colored children always have appealed to me. I love their dreamy qualities, their rhythm, and their melody. Creating pictures for this story has been a genuinely happy ex- perience." Neptune's coat of arms must be the crest of a wave. If you would keep your friends don't put them to a severe test. Criminals Flee To Biro-Bidjan, Emess Asserts "My Battle" MOSCOW, (JTA)—The class of people now flocking to Biro-Bidjan and the mode of travel is deplored here by the Jewish press. It is the belief of the press that criminal elements and persons who have reason to avoid the authrities are taking advantage of the move- ment to recruit migrants for the Jewish autonomous region in Si- beria. Among the people in the last contingent to arrive in Biro-Sidjan were several with long criminal records. Russian Youth Refuse to the Periodical Protests Yiddish Idiom MOSCO W. (JTA) — Great preparations for the coming High Holy Day are reported by the Soviet press in the Ukrainian towns of Kamenetz-Podolsky, Bar and Nemirov. Synagogues in these and other towns are being repaired by lo- cal Jews, it is reported. The Communist newspaper, Emess, demands immediate anti- religious action to hamper these preparations. The circulation of the Soviet Jewish Press is growing, the num- ber of Yiddish books printed is in- creasing, but the Jewish township and the Jewish cultural workers evince no great desire to spread Jewish books, declaring that the Jewish youth does not wish to learn Yiddish. "It is better to learn an Euro- pean language," decares a school teacher in the Jewish township of Kublichi, Ukraine. HALIFAX, N. S. (JTA) — Mo Kolernian, a Polish Jew, is on his way back to his native land after a thwarted attempt to enter Ca- nada as a stowaway. The whistling of a popular tune proved to be Kolerman't undoing. Kolerman had arranged with two members of the crew of a steamer to stowaway on the ship at Gdynia. The arrangement called for one of them' to whistle a po- pular tune as soon as the ship reached Halifax. He boarded the ship safety. Unfortunately, the tune appa- rently was too popular, for a stew- ard happened to intone it while the ship was still on the high seas. When Kolerman heard the pre- arranged signal, he happily left his hiding-place and walked into the arms of an officer. After a brief stop at the local harbor the ship left on its return trip to Gdynia, where the Polish police will deal with the hapless stowaway. T. L HOWE. Prop. Dial 4.3344 WINDSOR, ONT.
