NEW YORK.—A call to Jewish
'organizations to ban undignified
forms of entertainment at their
meetings and functions has been
issued by the Jewish Education
i Association in a letter signed by
Judge Otto A. Rosaisky, acting
president; Samuel Rottenberg,
chairman of the board of direct-
ors, and Bernard Semql, honorary
secretary.
The letter speaks with candor
concerning certain "deplorable in-
novations" that are being intro-
duced into private as well as pub-
, lie gatherings. Judaism, it ia point-

children and young people by the
quality of these gatherings. The
practice of introducing popular
songs and comedians of question-
, able refinement at public functions
and ceremonies has, it is under-
stood, called out the appeal.
"At weddings, in particular",
says the letter, "popular songs are
being introduced that are unwor-
thy of being part of our solemn
and beautiful marriage ritual."

"Kosher" Definition
"Meat can only be kosher when
it is properly selected, slaughtered
and handled under the supervision
of rabbinical supervisors,
su trie erv i:vi rs sit ritual
and sanctioned by the Hebrew or-
thodox rabbinical requirements.
The regulations as established by
the orthodox rabbis require strict
adherence to the Hebrew laws dur-
ing the entire process and a failure
to comply therewith would make
the product non-kosher."
This definition was incorporated
in a decision handed down by Mag-
istrate Malvin in the case of the
Neboh Kosher Provision Company
and its president, Abraham Kauf-
man, charged with intent to de-
fraud and with unlawful exposure,
for sale of non-kosher meat, con-
sisting of four barrels of tongue.
SAMUEL W. LEIB
dacy for State Senator, on the Re-
publican Ticket, from the 6th
District, stated:
"In choosing representatives to
serve them in the various public
offices the people should be care-
ful in voting for candidates whose
long period of residence in the ci-
ty and whose educational back-
ground and experience gives their
voters definate assurance that
their elected representatives will
be well able to intelligently re-
present them."
Application must be made be-
fore Sept. 28 by calling Mrs. Metz,

I I stick, Madison 2429, or by writ-
ng to the Junior Players' Theater,
1654 Virginia Park.
Miss Goldstick, Bachelor of Ora-
tory, studied with Prof. Rollo An-
son Tallcolt of Valparaiso Univer
city. She taught at the Gorney
Private School of Expression in
New York. She also taught in Chi-
cago and Pontiac and in Detroit
or three years.
Mrs. H. Metz, a graduate of
Columbia College of Expression
n Chicago, taught speech work in
, Flint and Detroit and in the pub-
ic schools She also made proles-
ional appearances on the Lyceum
tage and the Little Theater of
D hicago. She has been active in
etroit amateur theatricals for a
umber of years.
With the closing of the recrea-
tional period of the year, the Jew-
ish Childrens Home has resumed
the regular course of its daily
routine life.
Opening of the schools has again
brought to the surface the pro- I
blems involved in the outline of a
the different courses for the child- R
ren, fitting their capabilities and
suited to their individual talents.
, Arrangements for Talmur Torah
attendance are made and all de-10
.:
stands of the season complied
with. The pressing haste due to
the early arrival of the holidays
demands strict attention. Syna- N
gogue attendance for children was .E
arranged through the generosity IR
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek at
supplementary exercises.
The past few months of leisure
were devoted to recreation. Activ-
ities were arranged to satisfy
these demands. Advantage was
taken of the possibilities offered'
by the open spaces adjoining the
home. Baseball occupied the ma-
jor part of the day, but streaks of
other games were constantly run-
ning through the texture of the
daily activities. The whole pro-1
gram was carried out with the
primary aim of pleasure and en-1
joyment, but the rules and regu-
lations of sportsmanship and fair .
play were strictly adhered to.
The home availed itself of the
opportunity offered by the Fresh,
Air Camp at Brighton, Mich.,
where a group of children enjoyed'
the pleasure of this highly c.mi-
mendable agency. The Depart-,
ment of Recreation gave generous
assistance in the organization of
a woodcraft class under the able
guidance of the well-known di-
rector, Miss Anna Austin.
Bailik's Last Word S
Upon this important occasion in the lives of the
Jewish people, I take this opportunity of extending
sincerest Rosh Hashonah Greetings and Best Wishes

will see a cessation of race prejudice, so prevalent
throughout the entire world.

CONVERSION
Your question, why I do not try
to make converts, has, I must say,
somewhat surprised me. The duty
to proselytize springs clearly from
the idea that outside a certain be-
lief there is no salvation. I, as ■
Jew, am not bound to accept that
d ogma, because according to the
teachings of the rabbis, "The
righteous of all notions shall have
part in the rewards of the future
world." Your motive, therefore,
is foreign to me; nay, as a Jew,
I am not allowed publicly to at-
tack any religion which is sound
in its moral teachings.
—Moses Mendelssohn, 1770.
