Be Sure to Vote on Sept. 11

Considerable agitation has been con-
ducted in the press, and in petitions to pub-
lic officials, in an effort to secure an exten-
sion of time on Primary Day, Sept. 11,
which is the second day of Rosh Hashonah,
in order to enable Orthodox Jewish voters
to cast their ballots without breaking tra-
ditional law against writing on a festival
day.
It is unfortunate that such a condition
should have given politicians—the Jewish
much more than the non-Jewish—an op-
portunity to attempt to capitalize on a
Jewish issue by proposing schemes where-
by Jews could gain extra time for casting
their ballots.
As a matter of fact, there will be ample
time, before the closing of the polls, for
Jews to cast their ballots on Sept. 11. At
7:30 p. m. on that day, writing will be
perthissible, and Orthodox Jews will not
be compelled to lose their franchise.
Under these circumstances we urge
Jewish voters to be in line at the polls at
the hour of 7:30 p. m. on Sept. 11 to cast
their ballots. If at all possible, not a sin-
gle Jew should sacrifice the right to vote,
and the occasion should be utilized for a
demonstration of Jewish loyalty and for
an expression of patriotism by the casting
of ballots.
Even if only 10 minutes were to remain
between the traditionally permissible time
for voting and the hour for the closing of
the polls, such time should be utilized for
voting purposes rather than that Jews
should ingratiate themselves with politi-
cians. In the present instance, there is
plenty of time left between the end of the
holiday and the closing of the polls for
Jews to reach the voters' line, and every
Jew should make it a point to cast his
ballot on Primary Day.

Gentiles Preferred

A correspondent sends us a sample of
the stationery of Gratiot Inn at Port Huron,
Mich., on the bottom of which appears the
following line: "The management prefers
to cater only to a Gentile cLientele."
Our correspondent makes the comment
that a number of Detroit Jews have un-
knowingly "tainted" this resort with their
Jewish money, and she feels that they
should be warned. She is right. Those
who do not know should be warned. As a
matter of act, however, the hotel itself
sounds the warning. Its management is
certainly much more honest about it than
those of other resorts who deny that they
discriminate but slyly manage to keep Jews
out.
This hotel, therefore, speaks for itself:
it prefers a Gentile clientele, lherefore it
does not want Jewish money. If, after this
warning, Jews will continue to patronize
this hostelry, it will be the disgrace of
individuals who have not learned the
meaning of self-respect.

The Late Max J. Kohler

An exceptionally able man is lost to
Jewry in the death of Max J. Kohler.
One of the few surviving members of
an unusually picturesque group of Amen-
can Jewish communal leaders whose activi-
ties in the interests of their people began
40 years ago, Mr. Kohler ranked high as a
profound student of Jewish problems and
as a man who always made a thorough job
of everything he undertook to do.
He ranked as the outstanding authority
on immigration problems and on questions
affecting minority rights of Jews, and the
literature on these subjects would be in-
complete without his views, opinions and
compilation of data.
When the Michigan alien registration
bill was fought here, it will be recalled
that it was Mr. Kohler who stepped in to
assist the Detroit attorneys. While he did
not personally appear in the Federal Court
to argue on the unconstitutionality of the
measure, he was one of the authors of the
important brief which was a decisive factor
in defeating the Michigan law.
A lot of space would be required to list
all the books written and edited by Mr.
Kohler. He was a prolific writer, and as a
student of Jewish history earned a ranking
0 position among American Jewish scholars.
One of his most important works was the
1
recent statement submitted to the State
Department in which he outlined the pre-
r.
cedents for action by the United §tates
against the persecution of Jews in foreign
countries. The Tydings anti-Nazi Resolu-
tion was based on this important statement
by Mr. Kohler.
It is said that Mr. Kohler's last illness,
which brought about his death. was due to
overwork on issues affecting German-

Jewish refugees. In the present crisis, Mr. I I
Kohler's services were urgently needed,
and his loss will therefore be especially
felt in view of his untimely death in a very •
tragic period in our history.

The Power of Ridicule

B. Chapman, editor of the London
Daily Express, upon his arrival in New
York for a brief stay, said that "hlosley's
Blackshirts are the laughing stock of Eng-
land." Said Mr. Chapman:

The England Fascist movement is not very
serious, and foreign correspondents in England
take a greater interest in the Blackshirts than
does the general English public.
So laughable does Britain think the move-
ment that Parliament is considering a bill ban-
ning colored shirts as uniforms.
The only time the Blackshirts are interesting
is when they meet with Communists. Then
there is something doing. Aside from that,
however, the English public keeps away from
Mosley's meetings.
I believe with the general English public
that Fascism in England is bound to die. It is
an outgrowth of the depression, and prosperity
is being rapidly restored in England. Mosley's
Fascism will fall of its own inherent fallacy
and from the laughs of the English public.

If these BlaCkshirted Mosleyites are
really the laughing stock Mr. Chapman
says, then it would be a mistake for Parlia-
ment to ban colored shirts as uniforms.
Why not make these uniforms the symbols
for ridicule?
The statement just quoted contains one
very interesting reference to the emphasis
placed in news by foreign correspondents
upon the activities of the Mosley group.
But there is no need of becoming too
alarmed over the rise of Fascism. The
obligation is to be on guard against a pe-
riod of danger from such growth of re-
actionary political groups. At the same
time, we must not forget the importance of
fighting such movements with ridicule.
Perhaps the best weapon against the stu-
pidity of Mosley's anti-Semitism was re-
sorted to by the New York Times which,
editorially, dissected the Mosley brand of
Jew-hatred in the following fashion:

In all this time, not a single work, not a single
voice has been heard which might even remotely
be compared with the artistic level of Germany
before 1933. What the German Jews actually
meant to German art is only now becoming evi-
dent, now when the German public no longer
reads its newspapers, and no longer visits the thea-
ter, where the wealth of a creative spirit no
longer is offered, but only a "trend" bearing the
stamp of approval of the ministry for propaganda,
which commanded it.

'

Destructive Jewry

A second thesis of National Socialism is that
relating to the destructive, injurious nature of
the Jews. "Aryan-ry" is constructive in ten-
dency, building of "Blood and the Soil." Jewry,
on the other hand, is destructively analytical,
working only with its brain and its nerves, said
the Nazi propagandist.

It might be worthwhile, perhaps, *et make a

most critical persons. In this case (that of the

essential spiritual differences ostensibly existing

between Germans and Jews) it may be said that

creative effort would scarcely succeed in shaping

a finished work without at least. some critical-
analytical filing. In the words of Henrik Ibsen,
greatest Scandinavian dramatist:

"To live means to 'fight the spectre of dark
powers within oneself. To write: to hold judg-
ment day over oneself."

The 'nature of art was never better formu-
lated. There can be no creation without criti-
cism. The decline of German art proves the
falseness of a theory which was nothing but an

HE Judaization of Art and Press" has al-
ways been one of the most effective thesis
of German National Socialism. The argue
ment is that Jewish talent, through intrigue,
through artifice or through power,,has crowded
out existing "Aryan" talents. Now that the Jew-
ish artists, writers, journalists, actors and musi-
cians have been forcibly expelled from Germany,
it would seem that these previously "hindered"
great "Aryan" talents never existed. Theater,
cabaret, film and literature have sunk, in Ger-
many, to the lowest level.

economic maneuver against the enviously alb-
Heated "superiority" of their Jewish partners.

Artist Suffered in Flight

Those Jewish artists who within the year have
been torn from their German soil went to France,
to Switzerland, to Scandinavia, Holland, Czecho-
slovakia. Only a few went to the United States.
They suffered inconceivably, both economically
and spiritually. If they were writers, their works
were snatched up by emigrant publishing houses
in Rolland. Translations of their works, which
have no nationalistic limitations, had their effect
upon the world, which had broken from Hitler
Germany.

They struggle, but there is some hope for them.
Language, their instrument, has been torn from
their hands. They learn that of their new en-
vironment. And in 10 years, perhaps, they will
write so well in this new language that the stamp
of their style will be recognizable in it.
But the others,—the actors! Of course there
are cases like that of Elizabeth Bergner, who
worked day and night for a year to learn the
tones, rhythms and phonetics of English, and
has thus now become a most successful English
actress. Or Peter Loire, one of the most im-
portant of the younger actors, who has been
given a contract in Hollywood. The Zurich thea-
ter has taken in Gustav Hartung, Germany's most
talented director besides Max Reinhardt, and a
staff of the best of German actors.
Products of Necessity
But the rest? Almost a year passed before
they found themselves in groups again, groups
which could not act in the theater because there
was no economic basis for that. So they de-
cided to set up cabarets. Erika Mann (daughter
of the Nobel prize winner, Thomas Mann), who
is a talented and gifted actress, is heading such
an ensemble at Zurich. And in Paris, an estab-
lishment called "Paris-Vienna" was opened near
the Place de la Concorde. There Kurt Gerron,
talented and popular German actor, and Peter
Bach, Germany's most famous lute-player, fill
the stage.

MIDSUMMER MISCELLANY
The economic situation in'Ger-
many growing steadily worse and

It ended up with Haman having

everybody shouted "Pfui Haman!"
And before next Purim, it will
be "Pfui Hitler!" or maybe "Hiss
Hitler!"
Already, according to the for-
eign correspondents, many people
in Germany are carrying parcels
under their arms to avoid doing
the "Healing" to Mr. Hitler.
