WASHINGTON, — Paul Slay,
Ambassador from Belgium to the
United States, died Monday night
at the Emergency Ilospital. He •
was operated on for a gall-bladder
ailment Saturday.
Ambassador May was the only
Jewish envoy from a foreign noun-
try in Washington.
At or near the bedside when the
end came at 7:17 P. M. were Mn,,.
May and memlx•rs of the embassy
staff. His wife had been with him
almost constantly since he was
stricken.
Ambassador May's three dough- 1
ters are in Europe. One, Francoise
Slay, had planned to sail from
France Wednesday on the Ile de
France.

Ambassador May collapsed in
the heat early last week. At first
his condition was not regarded as
serious and it was expected that
he would be able to spent a month's
vacation in Newport.
Complications set in and an or-
ganic condition became aggrivated,
requiring the operation, from which
he did not rally.
Secretary Hull's Tribute
Secretary Hull paid tribute to
Ambassador May as a "warm per-
sonal friend," saying:
"I have been deeply shocked to
learn of the tragic death of the
Belgian Ambassador. Mr. May and
I h ad become warm personal
friends, and I shall feel his lose
personally as keenly as I shall of-
ficially.
"He had made a most distin-
guished place for himself in Wash-
ington, and this government
mourns his passing."
Mr. Hull went to the Belgian
Embassy to express his personal
sympathy to the Ambassador's
widow. He was arranging the of-
ficial honors.
Mr. May's death deeply affected
the diplomatic corps. Jules Henry,
Charge d'Affaires' of the French
Embassy, said:
"I am terribly sorter He was a
very, very good friend of mine. I
am more deeply distressed than I
can express."
