reported to be living in 68 cities
100,000 and more inhabi-
tants. About one-half of these,
or 1,765,000, were in New York
City alone. An additional nine
per cent lived in 219 cities of
25,000 to 100,000 and another
three per cent were reported is
461 cities of 10,000 to 25,000.
Less than 5 per cent of Ameri-
can Jewry reside in urbancom-
inanities of 10,000 and upward,
and of this number 84 per cent
are to be found .tn the larger
cities of the United States.
The United States census of
1930 reports that of the entire
population of this country, 56
per cent were urban and 44
per cent were rural. The com-
parison of 95 per cent of urban
dwellers among Jews and only
56 per cent among the entire
population of the country, re-
emphasizes the fact that the
Jews are largely urbanites.
Furthermore, the tendency
among Jews for sedentary occu-
pations, for over-abundant rich
diets, for the lack of physical
exercise, can be offset by the
return to the simpler and more
active life outdoors. The physi-
cal deterioration that is wit-
nessed to a greater extent
among adults in this country
after the age of 40 can be
overcome by the coming genera-
tion through greater attention
to the more wholesome recrea-
tion and living habits as exem-
plified in camp life.

By installing an oil burner
now, you save money on hot
water all summer long. For
a few cents a day, Petro.&-
Nokol gives an abundant
supply of hot water for kitch-
en, bathroom and laundry.

N LY $25 down. Then $15 a
month for a limited number
of months. That seems little
enough to pay for the solid comfort
of oil heat— for lifelong freedom
from furnace tending and ash
handling.
Then doesn't it surprise you to
learn that in a comparatively short
time a Petro-&-Nokol Oil Burner
actually
Saves its original cost!
X
It is thus apparent that camp-
ing for children is very vital to
the future of Jewry. The phys-
ical well being of our people,
as attested by statistics showing
that the Jewish youth of today
are better physical specimens
than their parents (by such
standards as height, weight,
chest expansion, etc.), has pro-
gressed very largely by reason
of the fact that since the begin-
ning of the century the Jews
have taken so wholeheartedly
to the camp movement.
,1
These efficient burners save on
fuel costs, laundry bills, cleaning
expense, papering and painting.
For example, an owner in Balti-
more, Md., writes that the total
saving traceable to Petro-&-Nokol
figured up to E101.25 in one year.
One explanation for this econ-
omy is the complete Petro-&-Nokol
line ... 3 distinct types . . . 16
different models...66 sizes. With
this complete line, our representative
is able to make recommendations
that are amp/ady unbiased. His
sole interest is to make sure that
your furnace or boiler gets an oil
burner that is 100 per Cent suit-
able—one that 'will operate with
maximum of ciencyand economy.
Right now is the right time to
install oil heat. Monthly payments
do not start until Fall. And by in-
stalling now, you get hot water—
all you can use, all summer long
—at triflingcost. \Vrite or 'phone

My own theory is that the anti-
Semitism of those days was found-
ed on the monotheism of the Jews.
The Jews alone refused to wor-

a form of atheism, and frequently
used the word "atheists" in de-

ANCIENT RADICALS
It would appear that we Jews es;

"BUY IN PALESTINE"
Tozereth Ha-aretz is a Hebrew
term very much used in Palestine
today. It means "native prod-
ucts." And the movement for
Tozereth Ha-aretz is what w e
would call "Buy in Palestine."
The first words that the settler
to Palestine is taught are these.
And some of them learn to say it
without knowing really what it
means.
Anyway, that seems to be the
implication of a story told to me
by Ida Flatou, who has just re-
turned after a year's stay in Pal-
estine.
According to this story, a Jew- a Ci.a
ish woman In Palestine entered a ti!
grocery store and said, "Give me
some of this Tozereth Ha-aretz,
but it shouldn't be of this 'paskut-
sva higeh sechara' " (but none of k.
this damnable local stuff).

THE BRATS PROTEST
I was much impressed with a
little story that Miss Flatou re-
lated of the reaction of the Jews
of Palestine to the existing immi-
gration restrictions. A group of
small children, ranging between
7 and 10, gathered together in e ,
a room in Jerusalem and held their 4);,
wvn protest meeting. They de-
cided that they would go naked
until the restrictions were re-
pealed and Jews were allowed to `
enter Palestine.
And one little brat arose and
said: "I would go naked as a pro-
test until all Jews of the world
come to Palestine."
• • •
A SERIOUS PEOPLE
Miss Flatou, relating the inci-
dent, admitted that it depressed
her. She felt that it was bad for
small children to be so seriously
concerned with such adult mat-
ters.
But we Jews are a terribly seri-
ous people. To be such is our
fate and destiny. And when I
think of this incident in question,
I am convinced that somehow it
betokens p spirit on the part of
the Tishah (the Jewish settle-
ment of Palestine) that prophe-
sies the certain success of their
aims.

The first Jewish camp was
established in 1902 at Winthrop,
Maine, by Mr. Maroons. It was
called Camp Cobbossee. Then
followed other camps for a Jew-
ish clientele — Kennebec at
North Belgrade in 1906, Kohut
at Oxford in 1907, Wigwam at
Harrison in 1910, and Arcadia
at North Belgrade in 1913.
