NEW YORK. ( JTA ) — The
DAWA (German American Pro-
tective Alliance) meeting in Madi-
son Square Garden for the pur-
pose of declaring a boycott
against American Jewry, last
Thursday' night unleashed one of
the strongest anti-Jewish attacks
ever tolerated in this country.
The meeting which lunched the
long-heralded campaign to "boy-
cott the boycotters" was marked
with a definite Hitlerite stamp
which could not be disguised be-
hind a maze of American flags
and bunting. It was attended by
19,000 persons who crowded all
available space in the auditorium.

DAWA IN DETROIT?

Is the Dawa movement of the
Nazis spreading to Detroit?
During the past week The
Detroit Jewish Chronicle re;
ceived numerous reports from
local Jewish merchants, reveal-
ing that delegations of Germans
are making the rounds of busi-
ness houses to ascertain whe-
ther they carry German-made
goods. Those not carrying such
merchandise are told that they
can not expect German busi-
ness.
In several instances, merch-
ants were called upon to buy a
German "eagle" sign in order
to attract the business of Ger-
mans.
The Chronicle is now conduct-
ing an investigation into this
latest Nazi propaganda in
Detroit.

The most important relief appeal in years will be addressed to Detroit Jewry at the

Sunday evening, May 27, in tlo main ballroom of Hotel Statler. The drive will continue

ing dinner.

Proskauer, president of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish, Philan-
thropies, will be the speaker of the evening, bringing to the group an analysis of the problems that face world Jewry
today in their international as well as their national and local aspects.

,

An unusual musical treat is in store for those who attend the dinner. Ilya Schkolnik, concert master of,

O

THE PERENNIAL TEST

An Editorial

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

"We feel ourselves especially fortunate this year," uld Henry
Wineman, chairman of the campaign, who will preside at the dinner,
"in having at our opening dinner Judge Joseph M. Proskauer. Judge -
Proskauer does not often leave New York City, because his keen
insight and deep understanding of the problems of Jewish ,philan-
, thropy make heavy demands on his time and ability there. However,
he has honored Detroit by accepting our invitation to speak to us on
this important occasion.

NCE A YEAR the Jewish community is put to the
test and is asked to declare itself either in favor of
unity or for disintegration; to go on record either in
favor of a wholesome and healthy cultural and recrea-
tional program, or for a policy of irresponsibility toward
youth and indifference to the needs of the indigent and
the destitute.
Once again we approach the perennial test with a
feeling of confidence that, as in preceding years, Detroit
Jewry will not fail in its obligation to the important local,
national and international causes; that our people will
.vkiettce a, deyotion to the important agencies which care
for the needsof the impoverished and for the educational
and recreational requirements of the Jewish community.

Will Show Special Talkie

"We are also delighted to have a musical program of the caliber
ensured by artists like Mr. Schkolnick and Mr. Kottler.
"In addition to all these other features, a talking motion picture
bringing the acute need for the work of egencjes which will benefit
from the Allied Jewish Campaign, w111 be' shown at the dinner. This
moving picture has been especially prepared for us and is a graphic
and' moving portrayal of the vital forces set in motion by the moneys
raised in the campaign for the good of Jews throughout the world.
The small groups to whom this picture has already been shown have
been loud in its praise and stirred by its appeal.".
Pre-campaign solicitation has been vigorously conducted for the
past two weeks through two separate groups, the Special Gifts Division
and the Executive Committee •of the General Division. In both
groups, the objectives have. been to see that all prospect slips are
covered, that new givers pledges ere brought in, and that increases
