THE WEEK IN REVIEW I

By MILTON BROWN

PALESTINE
The Jews of Palestine are once
more at grips with their most both-
ersome problem, immigration. The
action of the l'alestine government
in granting 5,600 immigration cer-
tificates to the Jewish Agency for
Palestine, instead of the 20,100 re-
quested, caused a wave of indigna-
tion to sweep over Jewish Pales-
tine.
At the same time the government
added fuel to the fire by issuing a
decree forbidding the picketting by
Jewish groups of enterprise em-
ploying Arab instead of Jewish la.
bor. The picketting of the Jewish.

bdsiness employing Arabs is a
measure on which all Jewish groups
and factions are united and it was
immediately announced that this
vital fight would be maintained.
Indignation meetings were hur-
riedly organized to protest against
immigration restrictions and all the
Hebrew papers issued extras charg-
ing the government with "chaining
immi gration."
One mass meeting at Tel Aviv
arranged by the Jewish community
council and which was to have been
addressed by representatives of all
factions was prohibited by the pol-
ice at the last minute. The crowd
42,000 left the auditorium shout-
ing "down with the government"
and singing the Hatikvah.
The excitement created in Pal-
estine by the action of the govern-

"If the boycott were carried
to lengths, actually endangering
our economic situation, it would
not mean that we would let the
Jews go free. No! The hatred,
rage and despair of the German
people would first of all vent itself
on those who can be grabbed in
the homeland.
"A Last Warning"
"If the Jews imagine that the
bloodless course of the German
revolution gives them right to dis-
port themselves again in their
habitual impudence and arrogance
and provoke the German people,1
let them be warned not to tax our
patience too severely.
"We have spared the Jews, but
if they think they can therefore
re-appear on the stage and in the
editorial office, if they imagine
they can again stroll along the
Kuerfurstendamm as if nothing
at all had happened, let them take
my words as a last warning."
This evoked tremendous ap-
plause from the audience.
