rEEMEIEMWEDETIC, EDETROITIEWISR ORM ICLE and THE LE.unr. CHRONICLE HEART - TO - HEART 'TALK WITH THE JEWISH COMMUNITY (Continued from Page One.) 4 1) t 1 t I 1 I development of Palestine for those Jews who want to make it their homeland, constitutes a bright chapter in human history. Great achievements were made possible by these ef- forts. Hundreds of Jewish communities in Eastern Europe were rehabilitated up to the point where they need only comparatively small support from us in order to maintain their essential Jewish institutions; tens of thousands of Jews, in Russia, for example, were rescued from class- degradation and transformed into producers and, as such, have an equal place in that country with all who are recognized as citizens, against whom no discriminations, political or social, are imposed. In Palestine, a huge waste- land has been transformed into a land of happy habita- tion where nearly a quarter of a million Jews have found opportunity and serenity. Farms and orchards and vine- yards, tilled and harvested by Jews, have taken the place of sand dunes and swamp and marsh. Cities and towns, vocal with the hum of industry and commerce, have arisen as if conjured up by an Aladdin's lamp. Schools and hos- pitals maintained in Palestine by Jews minister to the cultural and physical needs of the Jewish population and their doors are wide open to the rest of the population. And a great university crowns all that has been wrought there in that land, which has a fond place in the hearts of all Jews. Except for such incidents as are part and parcel of the lot of all humanity, it had seemed to us, for a fleeting moment, that Jewish life had become tranquilized. Spor- adic outbursts of race hatred in European universities and even in some backward European countries were more or less discounted by all of us as due, in the case of the uni- versities, to the Mental restlessness of post-war youth, fanned by demagogues into disorderly manifestations, and in the case of the backward countries to the ignorance of the populace—which would be overcome as the universal economic depression abated. But now a whole, large segment of our people have. by a stroke of the pen, been thrown into abject misery. What has happened since the beginning of last year is too vivid in all our minds to need retailing here. And, if there were the possibility that we might forget, every day has its own new, added tale of a people, our innocent co-religionists, syffering as few of our people have suffered since the Middle Ages. Much against their pride, the Jews of Germany have called upon the Jews of America, of Great Britain—but especially upon us in this country—to assist them in these dark hours of degradation and mental despair. The thou- sands of them who have left their native land to become wanderers over the face of the earth, and those who have gone to the lands from which they or their parents came to Germany, and the thousands who have gone or are plan- ning to go to Palestine to begin life over again, have ap- pealed to us for help. They have appealed to us not merely for help in the form of dollars, but also for the help that comes from the clasp of the hand of fellowship. Their appeal is the greatest appeal for service that has come to the Jews of America in our generation. It is a stronger appeal than those which came to us during the years of the World War and thereafter. It is an appeal to our minds and to our hearts, and, necessarily to our purses. It involves a duty which we owe to ourselves and to our children, to our standing as Jews in America and the world over. Taking the past history of Jewish benevolence into account, it is perhaps not necessary, but nevertheless I urge upon you to respond to this appeal. It is my conviction that the unified effort of both of the organizations that have joined in this service of rescue and rebuilding will be successful, but to attain that success will require every ounce of the strength and devotion that is in all of us. It's an even greater record that Chevrolet is making for 1931! Already, sales are tens of thousands of cars ahead of last year. Production is running higher than that of any other automobile company. And every day, from state after state, collies the same report on registrations: Chevrolet is lending all other ears! The big reason for such preference is plainly shown at the right. Chevrolet has so many. vital features that others in the low-price field have left out: Knee-Action wheels that are fully enclosed. A six-cylinder valve-in-head •Blue-Flame" engine. Big, "cable-controlled" brakes. Large, spacious bodies by Fisher. And real "shock-proof' steering. No other low-priced automobile has a single one of these five features. That's 'illy no other is barked by such a statement as this: of the late Harry Karp, vice- president of National Mizrachi or- ganization and leader of Mizrachi Youth in America, was held April 30 at the Beth Tephila Emanuel Cynagogue. Rabbi Seymour Zambrowski of Cleveland, national executive di- rector of Mizrachi Youth, who was one of the closest friends of the deceased, was the principal speaker. Tributes were also paid by Rabbis Aishiskin, Eisenman, Stoll- man and Ungar. Leon Kay spoke in the name of the Jewish Na- tional Fund Council and the Zion- ist Organization. Max Temchin, president of local Mizrachi Youth, was chairman of the evening, and Cantor Goldin made the Hans karah. A considerable sum was raised at the meeting for the memorial fund which is being organized by Mizrachi Youth of America to commemmorate the name of the deceased by establishing a new Mizrachi Kvutzah or by building a new Beth Hapoalim,—a center for the Mizrachi pioneers. LONDON. James G. McDon- ald, high commissioner, told the council of the high commis- sion for refugees on May 2 that Palestine offers the only im- )aediate area of colonization for German refugees—who are mostly Jews—as far as opera- tions on an appreciable scale are concerned. McDonald said the total refu- gees in April were 63,200 in comparison with 59,300 in De- cember, and said their plight was desperate since tens of thousands of refugees were "destitute, homeless and un- certain of tomorrow." EQUALITY CLUB Final arrangements are being made for the Mother and Daugh- ter banquet to be held May 9 at Club Dexter. Prizes will be given to guest mothers. There will be a floor show and dancing. The club is sponsoring a card party. Details will be given in next issue of The Chronicle. The next meeting will be held at Mrs. Alice Gallant's home, 2341 Grand avenue.
