LAYMEN'S SERVICE A GREAT SUCCESS
Unique Experiment at Temple Both El, Detroit, Proves To Be
Highly Inspirational.
So full of inspi ation and sug-
gestion was the Layman's Service
which was held at Temple Beth
El, on Sunday morning, April 15,
that Dr. Leo M. Franklin said he
hopes to make it an annual event
in the Temple calendar. Seven
men, all members of Congregation
Beth El, participated in the serv-
ice, four of them reading the ritual
service, and three of them dividing
among themselves the message of
the day. The readers were Joseph
Magidsohn, president of the Men's
Temple Club, under whose sponsor-
ship the /wren... was given, Ed-
mund M. Sloman, Dr. Herbert M.
Kellett and Lewis J. Weitzman.
Both the English and the Hebrew
portions of the ritual were rendered
with a depth of feeling that deeply
stirred the large congregation that
had assembled.
The first of the speakers was Dr.
Alvin D. Hirsch, who dealt with
the general theme, "What the
Synagogue Means to Me front the
Standpoint of an American Jew."
He expressed the thought that
without the synagogue as an in-
spirational force, the life of the
Jew must be empty and purpose-
less. Representing as he does the
fifth successive generation of mem-
bership in the Temple, he told what
the synagogue has meant to those
who were dear to him through all
these years, and of its significance
in his own life.

theme from the standpoint of a
