their skill have placed them in a
position of authority and fame.
But we must not overlook an-
other point, that for over half a

century Jewish writers have
been taking the utmost pains to
popularize in French the works
of Jewish writers who wrote and
write in the Jewish languages,
Yiddish and Hebrew. There are
many anthologies, translations
and essays on Jewish authors.
Sorely the source deserves some
acknowledgement. What would
the French say if some Ameri-
can Japanese, or Palestinian au-
thor, well-known and respected
in his own country, had one day
taken it into his head to re-in-
vent "Penguin Inland," and,
without so much as mentioning
Anatole France, had launched
under his own name "a floating
isle of penguins," developing the
story by adding a few new epi-
sodes? Or if a well-known Jew-
ish author had dared to trans-
late into his own language an
allegory on the lines of "Chan-
tecler," modernizing it a little?
I wonder whether this appar-
ent plagiarism by these princes
of anti-Semitic writers is not
something that should be taken a
little further?
