U. S. Investigates the Nazis.

While there were several disappointing
elements in the discussion on the floor of
the House of Representatives of the United
States Congress on the Dickstein Bill to
investigate Nazi activities in this country,
the resulting overwhelming vote in favor
of the resolution should be welcomed by
all fair-minded men with gratitude.
The regrettable thing about the discus-
sion was that many of the Congressmen
voted for the measure on the ground that
it aimed at an investigation of "foreign
activities" in this country. The principle
involved in the investigation of the spread
of the Nazi poison to this country was to
them a secondary matter.
But the vast majority of the Congress-
men, let it be stated in all fairness, were
moved by the events in Germany and by
the outrages perpetrated against the Jew-
ish people to vote for the Dickstein resolu-
tion and to express their sentiments em-
phatically against the injection of Nazi
poison in America.
The action of our Congress should
hearten American Jewry and instill in
us again the faith that this country is one
of the ruling spirits of fairness and justice
in the world. In very few lands is the
sense of justice as dominant as it is here.
In very few spots on the globe is the right
of free speech and free press as passion-
ately defended as it is here. It is a source
of great satisfaction to know this and to
be able to feel proud of our American
institutions.
Under the heading "The Land Where
, Hate Should Die." the following poem
from the pen of Denis A. McCarthy was
recently released by the National Confer-
ence of Jews and Christians:

Jews have anything to add to Jewish culture?
Why is most of what passes for Jewish training
a travesty and a breeder of 'antagonism to-
ward things Jewish? Why do the Jews fail to
rise to the opportunity of reclaiming their an-
cestral homeland? Why do not even the most
cruel persecutions enable them to transcend
their petty differences and their snobbishness
and to unite in the face of the common en-
emy?
The main source of all these anomalous
conditions is the lack of true Jewish leader-
ship, of leadership that is representative of all
the different callings and abilities among Jews
and that functions as a means of furthering
Jewish life. Those at the head of Jewish af-
fairs are drawn from eimong the owners of
large business concerns, corporation lawyers,
and financiers. They mean well and do re-
markably well in a philanthropic way. But by
figuring as the only representative leaders of
the Jews they are bound to create the. im-
pression that the Jews are a money-minded
people, since no one without the money has
much authority among them. Why are not
labor leaders, writers, artists, educators. even
rabbis, found among those who dictate the
nolicies of Jewish life? Claiming to be a
priest people, with a spiritual mission to the
world, the Jews set a poor example when they
pass by those whose distinction is based on the
things of the spirit.
But the strangest paradox of all is that
those who are in control of Jewish communal
institutions, with very few exceptions, really
do not want the Jewish people to have a fu-
ture. They frankly avow the desire to see
Jewish life disappear and would readily double
their contributions to Jewish philanthropies if
they knew that thereby they were relieving
Jews of their Judaism. They have a right to
their views, and with views such as their they
ought, as a matter of honor. keep out of Jew-
ish life altogether. What will then happen to
the institutions they support? The answer is:
If a people is so dependent upon those who
wish it were dead, it does not deserve to live.

• THAT WOULD BE PUNISHMENT
Ernest Barbarash points out that Hitler begins the same as
Haman, with an "H." And he wants to know if Hitler will also end
the same as Harlan—on the end of a rope.
Answering which, it seems to us—a more adequate punishment
for Hitler would be to make him sit the rest of his life and read his
own speeches.
