without even considering the splendid services, convivial

STAG SMOKER AT
CENTER MARCH 28
A gala event will be presented
at the Jewish Community Center,
Woodward near Holbrook, Wednes-
day evening, March 28, at 8:15
in the form of a stag smoker.
Gus Dorais, athletic director of '
the University of Detroit, and''
Harry Kipke, head coach of the
University of Michigan, will be the
guest speakers for the evening.
This event is being sponsored by
the smoker committee, consisting of
the members of the athletic coin-
mittee of the Jewish Community
Center and representatives of the
various councils of all divisions.
The program of the evening is as
follows:
.< "C ,
EMMA LAZAROFF SCHAVER
The outstanding feature of the
ninth annual concert to be pre-
sented by the Detroit Halevy Sing-
ing Society will be the cantata
"Song of Miriam," by Schubert.
In this cantata is expressed Mir-
iani's hymn of praise for the deliv-
erance of her people from slavery,
and the rejoicing of the people
over their freedom, their hopes for
a new and happier life and the
denunciation of their oppressors.
This these is especially significant
at this time, because the concert
will be presented during Pesach.
The various parts of this mu-
sical composition range from calm
and soft melodies to stirring and
forceful numbers. Although the
cantata is short, it is a work of
imperishable beauty.
The soprano solo will be sung
by the widely known and cele-
brated Detroit soprano, Mme.
Emma Lazaroff Scharer. Mole.
Scheyer recently made a brilliant
and sensational debut with the San
Carlo Grand Opera Company,
playing the leading feminine role
in "Faust." Shortly afterwards
she appeared in concert with Tito
Schipa, noted opera star, and as
solo star with the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra on several occa-
sions. Mme. Schaver's appear-
ances have not only been limited
to Detroit's music lovers, but have
charmed audiences in many other
cities as far east as New York
City. She has accepted as her
next engagement an appearance in
Toronto on April 29.
Dan Frohman of Cleveland will
conduct the concert. The accom-
paniment will be a two-piano ar-
rangement by Rebecca Katzman
Frohman and Rose Bassin, both of
whom are well known musicians
in Detroit.
The ninth annual concert will
be presented at Orchestra Hall,
on April 1. The advance sale of
tickets indicates a capacity audi-
ence.
