GOVERNOR ASKS LEGISLATORS TO EXTEND
VOTING HOURS ON SEPT. 11, SECOND DAY
ROSH HASHONAH, TO PERMIT JEWS TO VOTE

Governor William A. Comstock, having had his attention
called by The Detroit Jewish Chronicle to the fact that Sept.
11, which had been set aside as primary day in Michigan, is
the second day of Rosh Hashonah, addressed a message to the
State Legislature urging that voting hours be extended on
that day so that Orthodox Jews should be able to cast their
ballots. The message of the Governor reads:

No employee shall be discriminated against because of
his choice of representatives.

The accredited representatives of any group of
employees shall be free to bargain collectively in
regard to matters of common interest.

At the present time the Automobile Industry is
paying on an average, hourly wage rates equal to or
better than the 1929 rates. The ratio of weekly earn-
ings now approximates 90% of the 1929 earnings,
while the current cost of living is approximately 83%
of 1929.

Nevertheless, in response to the appeal of the Presi-
dent, the industry recommends to its members that in
plants covered by the Automobile Manufacturing
Code, the average weekly hours of productive workers
be reduced from 40 to 36 and that compensating
wage increases over rates prevailing in February, 1934,
be made effective on or before March 31, 1934.
