Charles Dickens' View of Jesus.

For 85 years, a manuscript by the late
Charles Dickens, under the title "The Life
of Our Lord," was kept a secret. This
biography of Jesus, which was written by
the author for his children, has now come
to life, and leading newspapers in English-
speaking countries are at present featuring
this great find.
It is natural, of course, that the very
name Charles Dickens should be sufficient
to sell this document. Nevertheless there
is sufficient cause for surprise that there
should be unconditional acceptance of a
document which maligns the Jews in tradi-
tional fashion. The Dickens story speaks
of Christ's healing powers, and then the
following reference is made to Jews:

Many Jews Raw this; and when they saw it,
they hated Jesus Christ the more; knowing that
the people, being taught and cured by him,
would not believe their Priests, who told the
people what was not true, and deceived them.
So they said to one another that Jesus Christ
should be killed, because he cured people on
the Sabbath Day (which was against their
strict law) and because he called himself the
Son of God. And they tried to raise enemies
against him, and to get the crowd in the streets
to murder Him.

The old story will be recalled about the
Irishman who pounced upon his Jewish
friend, and when asked for an explanation
he charged the Jews with killing Christ.
Reminded. that it happened almost 2,000
years ago, he said he had heard it only
yesterday. There is a good point to this
exaggerated story. Mere reminders of the
ancient calumny serve to inflame preju-
diced minds. And what is particularly
damaging about the Dickens story is that
it was written for children and is hailed as
a children's biography.
Talk about good-will! Everything that
may have been built up in a generation to
create amity between Christians and Jews
may be wiped out and forgotten as a result
of the publication of such a document.
Now Christian supporters of the good-will
movement will have some more explaining
to do to the bigoted among their people.
It is regrettable that so much space should
be given the recovered Dickens document
and its references to the Jews, even if the
author is one of the great authors of the
past century.

An Important Agreement.

It is unfortunate that a national or
- worldwide tragedy should be a motivating
force for the creation of unity. Neverthe-
less, we greet the agreement between the
Joint Distribution Committee and the
American Palestine Campaign of the Jew-
ish Agency for Palestine as one of the most
important results of the present German
crisis.
The present tragic conditions demand
united effort on the part of all Jews. Unity
has been delayed entirely too long, and it is
a source of deep satisfaction to know that
it has been finally achieved.
The two causes signed to the agreement
are 'without doubt the most important in
Jewish life today. Their funds provide the
means for relief as well as the necessary
money for the rehabilitation of the Ger-
man-Jewish refugees through settlement in
Palestine.
The leaders of the Joint Distribution
Committee and the American Palestine
Campaign of the Jewish Agency Palestine
are to be commended for the step they
have taken. It is only as a result of such
a move that we may hope actually to ac-
complish the results desired in the present
emergency, both insofar as the relief and
reconstruction efforts are concerned.

"For the past several years, we, the under-
signed, have been active in local political af-
fairs, and during that time have tried to serve
the Township in an honest, efficient, GENTILE
fashion.
"If our work in the past few years has been
satisfactory, we again ask your support as
Christian American men."

Comment on such a circular is superflu-
ous. It is a nasty bit of un-American
propaganda, and is contrary to all the
principles of fairness of which this land of
ours has been boasting for more than a
century and a half.
But merely to condemn it is not enough.
It is to be hoped that American citizens,
other than those of the Jewish fold who
are directly affected by this appeal to big-
otry, will speak out and will condemn the
outburst of hatred in no uncertain terms.
We are especially hopeful that Christian
Americans will let themselves be heard in
condemnation of this vile propaganda of
hate because we hope for all time to be
able to retain our faith in American prin-
ciples of justice, fair play and democracy.

German Jews' Patriotism.

There is an accumulation of evidence
that pro-Nazi propaganda is on the in-
crease in Detroit. While only a short time
ago Detroit Germans were outspokenly
opposed to Hitler and Hitlerism, Nazi
sentiment has now definitely increased in
the local German colony, and there is rea-
son to believe that it is beginning to dom-
inate the views of Detroit's Germans.
Together with this change in the tide of
local events reflecting the situation in Ger-
many also come frequent reports of the
spread of anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi propa-
ganda. The most dastardly effort to spread
pro-Hitler views and at the same time to
hurt our people is an attempt made by a
school teacher in one of our night schools
to inject the anti-Semitic poison in his lee-
tures to his classes. This teacher, who is
in the pay of this city, has spread the
word among his pupils that the reason
Hitler persecutes the Jews is because they
were traitors to Germany, they refused to
join the army and proved cowards.
What are the facts relative to the war
service of German Jews and their patriot-
ism? The White Book issued by the
American Jewish Committee describes it
briefly as follows:

Hitler and his followers maintain that the
Jew. cannot be
ded aGerman citizens
be use they shirked their duty in defending
their country during the World War.
Following are the figures of the participation
of Jews in the World War:
At the last pre-war census there were about
550,000 native German Jews in ■ total popu-
lation of •bout 6,000,000. At least 96,000
German Jews were in the army—that is 17.3
per cent of the German-Jewish population or
every sixth German Jew.
Seventy-eight out of • hundred Jews in the
army (that is, almost (our-fifths) or about
80.000, were itt the front line trenches.
On the basis of • total population of 68,000-
000, and twelve and a half million in the war
machinery, the percentage for Germany as •
whole is calculated at 18.3. This shows that
the Jews have relatively participated •s much
as their Christian compatriot..
Among the 96,000 Jews in the German
Army, more than 10,000, or about 11 per cent,
were volunteers.
More than 12,000 German Jews died for
their country. This i. 12.5 per cent as against
13.5 per cent for all German soldier..
A total of 35,000 Jewish soldiers were dec-
orated for b
, 23,000 were promoted,
and over 2,000 received commissions. This
is particularly remarkable, as before the war
there were no Jewish officers in the German
army, with the exception of • very few in
Bavaria.
There were over 165 Jewish aviator. at the
front; 30 Jewish aces were killed in action.
Following are • few expert opinions on the
war service of Jews:
General Berthold von Deimling: "As com-
manding general, I have seen many Jew, in
the trenches, and I have made the observation
that the Jewish soldiers and officers have done
their duty to the same extent as their Christian
comrades." (Roland Zeitschrift fuer Gesell-
schat and Kunst, Number 25, Berlin, 1924.)
Defense Minister, Doctor Otto Gessler: "I
have the highest respect for the many, many

Two Striking Indictments
of the Hitler Regime

"Murder — Made in Germany" and "Nazism: An
Assault on Civilization" Brands Hitlerism as
Humanity's Greatest Enemy.

'MURDER - MADE IN GERMANY '' Si Heine Liepmann. Harper

Brothers,

"NAZISM: AN ASSAULT ON CIVILIZATION Edited by Pierre Van Pansaen and
James Waterman Wise. Hamilton Smith and Robert Haas, 17 East Forty-
Ninth street, New Wort on 500.

A year's news reports of Hit-
ler atrocities fade into insiirnifi-
caner compared with the horrible
impression that is left on the
mind upon reading the resume
of the oppressions and persecu-
tions which are credited to the
brutalities of the Nazis since
they ascended to power.
There have been protests and
outbursts of indignation, Liberty-
loving people have rebelled. De-
cent people feel outraged.
But all these expressions of in-
dignation are revived with a re-
doubled force upon reading the
account of Ferman murder in
Liepinann's volume, for the writ-
. ing of which he is now serving a
jail sentence. An Amsterdam
co
a retrrnssainntejnesw

refugee
gee author,
to a month in jail for writing this
account of German atrocities in
novel form, the court holding to
the view that Liepmann libeled
the head of a friendly govern-
ment.

BASED ON EXPERIENCES

The Nazi government is now
asking for Liepmann's extradi-
tion. but liberal elements are
confident that such dangerous
action will be avoided and pre-
vented.
Francois Pauwels, Liepmann's
attorney, charged that his client
was tried on the official com-
plaint of the Reich, and that the
law invoked carries with it
■ maximum four-year prison sen-
tence. The passage upon which
the charge was based is Liep-
mann's allegation that Hindens
burg's estate in East Prussia had
received money from German re-
lief funds and that Hitler's ap-
pointment came following a prom-
ise that there will be no inves-
tigation into the matter.
The charge against Hoiden-
burg in this volume reads:

"Hindenburg is the man who
on Jan. 30, 1933, made Hitler
Chancellor—at • time when the
National Socialists had already
lost 2,000,000 votes and Hitler's
power had posed its zenith.

tablished the fact qt11.:' Hinden:
burg's estate, Neudeck had had
the benefit of money under the
Emit Prussia relief fund. So
Hitler became Chancellor of the
Reich, and the Commission of
Inquiry disappeared."

"Murder—Made in Germany"
is the narrative of the author's
experiences in a concentration
camp. Incredible as these ex-
periences are, they are vouched
for as the absolute and factual
truth. In his foreword, the au-
thor declares:
"I will answer with my hon-

or, my livelihood and my life
for the fact that all the inci-
ca
dents in this
book have actually
happened.
"I cannot sleep at night when
I think of the Jews. Every night
I hear ■ thousandfold rattling

in men's throats, screaming and
choking. I see eyes slowly •
growing dim. I see hands crushed
to • bloody pulp, backs with the
skin stretched like a balloon.
see bloody beards, crushed
feet and corpses—corpses."

Thus, Liepmann's novel is an
account of one form of atrocity
after another. Every form of
cruelty imposed on humans in
Germany finds corroboration in
his book.

RISKED RETURN TO REICH

(laving escaped from the con-
centration camp to Paris, where
he started to write his book,
Liepmann nevertheless risked a
return trip to Germany on a
forged passport and managed to
get out of the country unharmed
to relate all of his findings, dur-
ing his incarceration and on his
visit with the false passport.
Horrible as the book is, it is
so complete in its revelations,
that Ludwig Lewisohn called it
"brilliantly vivid and scrupul-
ously authentic. As both story
and document it deserves the wid-
est circulation." And Lion
Feuchtwanger said in lauding
the book: "Not only an extreme.
ly useful, but furthermore a good
and impressive work. I earnest.
ly wish it may have the widest
possible circulation."
"Murder—Made in Germany`
serves an important purpose in
revealing to the world anew the
tragedies in the Reich, at the
same time emphasizing the fact
that the German people is not in
back of these atrocities; that the
Storm Troopers are merely the
band of murderers and bully.

THE MORMON REFUGEES

Further, we have had refugees in our own America. I refer
to the Mormons, who were driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois, and emi-
grated through the then pathless wilderness to Utah.

There was a remarkable similarity between these :Mormons and
the Jews. It is not strange that they referred to themselves as Israel
—and all the rest of the people as Gentiles.
In the first place, they seemed to possess something of the
alleged Jewish knack for business. Historians generally admit that

JIM TULLY ON SOLOMON

So Jim Tully has written a scenario around Haym Solomon,
Jewish patriot of the American Revolution. It will be called "Son
of Liberty.
Written by Tully, it may be taken for granted that it will be a
good piece of work. It will be interesting to see what an Irishman
will do with the Polish-Jewish patriot.

THE HESSIAN INCIDENT

Stanwood S. Menken, the 100 per cent patriot, president of the
American Defense Society, who is a great-grandson of Haym Solomon,
once told me that it was Haym Solomon who conceived the idea of
the attack on the Hessians on Christmas night.
It will be remembered that Washington captured these Iles.sians
when they were all in a drunken stupor, celebrating Christmas. I
hope Tully has put this incident into his scenario.

A HEINE STORY

Harry Acton, New York American scribe, the other day told the
story of the owner of a restaurant who was forever upbraiding a
waiter for his poetry scribbling.
There is a classic story told with the same idea about the
German-Jewish poet, Heine.
Heine's uncle, a German Babbitt, according to this story, once
remarked: "If Heinrich had learned a good trade, he wouldn't have
to be writing books."
