DEBATING LEAGUE
TO OPEN SEASON
Boycott

of German Goods

To El C-n•ral Theme

for Dit.ctr.s'on.

The recently organized Detroit
Jewish Debating League will open
its initial season the week of Sun-
day, Feb. 4, when the first round
of debates on the league proposi-
tion "Resolved, that in view of
the current Nazi persecutions of
the Jews in Germany, an organ-
ized boycott of German goods on
the part of American Jews is de-
sirable" will take place, Theodore
II. Baruch, league manager, an-
nounced.
The Detroit Jewish Debating
League is an organization formed
for the purpose of stimulating
forensic activity on the part of the
Jewish youth of Detroit. It con-
sists of six members, Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, Temple Beth
El, Congregation B'nai David,
Congregation B'nai Moshe, the
Jewish Center and the Philomathic
Debating Society. Each member
in represented by a three-man
team which will debate both sides
of the proposition, both at home
and away, constituting four rounds
of debate for each team.
The teams are competing for a
city championship, which will be
determined on the basis of the
number of debates won and lost
throughout the season, as well as
of a point system. One point will
be counted for each judge's vote,
and one additional point for each
victory. At the end of the four
preliminary rounds, the two rank-
ing .teams will clash in an extra
debate for the title, which will be

a grand affair, and a climax to the
season.
In the first round, Congregation
B'nai Moshe, upholding the affirm-
ative, will match arguments with
Shaarey Zedek's negative trio;
B'nai David will also sustain the
affirmative, meeting Philomathic
Debating Society as its first op-
ponent. In the third contest on
the schedule, Temple Beth El's
affirmative squad clashes with the
Jewish Center. All debates will
find affirmative teams playing
hosts to their respective negative
opponents.
With the mailing out of bulle-
tins and copies of the league con-
stitution to the member organiza-
tions, the league season has offi-
cially begun. Anyone interested
in obtaining further information
about the league, or in assisting
in a coaching or other capacity, is
urged to communicate with Theo-
dore B. Baruch, 2237 Taylor av-
enue, Garfield 3728-W, after
p, m, any day of the week.

LUNCHEON SUCCESS

North Woodward branch, Jew-
ish Women's European Welfare
Organization, held its first annual
donor luncheon at the Statler Ho-
tel on Tuesday. Jan. 9, and it
proved a huge success
In glowing terms, Rabbi Leon
Frain compared the work of the
organization with the mellowness
of the Jewish heart. The enter-
taining playlet written by Ber-
nard Isaacs and directed by Betsy
Ulanoff dramatized the work of „
the organization.
A touch of color was added by
the Russian dancers, Yasha and
Masha Andre, entertainers at
the Russian Village or. Twelfth
street.
The organization thanks Rabbi
Franc, Mr. !noes, the Chronicle,
the Russian Village and the Aron-
Rion Printing Company for their
co-operation. Proceeds of the z
luncheon will go to help European
widows and orphans.
The organization is giving a
theater party Sunday afternoon.

America, "the old order chang-

La Salle! . . . In designing these cars, the prece-
dents of the past were completely ignored. For
progress means change! . . . Of foremost impor-
tance is the revolutionary new system of front-end
construction—"Knee-Action" wheels—giving, by
far, the finest ride ever known in any automobile.
Even in the rear seat, passengers can now ride at
high speeds, over rough roads, in complete relaxa-

control mechanisms have been greatly improved.
The motors have been endowed with new smooth-

of every car has been so radically improved that
only after a thorough demonstration and inspec-
tion can you appreciate the full advancement
that has been made. . . . And, even in the
face of today's rising market, prices have been
drastically reduced. . . . The new Cadillacs are
now on display at our showrooms. The La Salle
—a completely new car, entirely re-designed
in ail its phases—and equipped exclusively
with bodies by Fleetwood—will be available
within a few weeks. The V-I6, as usual,
is custom built to order. . . . We sincerely be-
lieve that this is the greatest announcement
Cadillac has ever made. See these cars with
that thought in mind. You can't be disappointed.
