Dr. Franklin then referred to the processes that have been in- voked in the schools of Germany for many years tee implant in the souls of German children a hatred of the Jew, and he continued: "At least two and po-slily three generations will have ta the out in Germany before a normal at- titude toward the Jewish people can possibly be restored. MELAMED A group of storm troopers, eight to 12 in number, armed to the teeth enter s a Jewish home in Germany. "Hie leader of the band casts a grim eye upon the member s of the famil y . and directs his men to seize the father and oldestson, whoare declared to he under arrest. Amid the stillnes s of the grave- yard, the prisoner s are whisked away. No one knows where they are taken. Days pass without a word from them. The local po- lice, to which the family applies for information, merely shrug their shoulder s in reply. The local prosecutor also tries to conceal his embarrassment. Meanwhile the family of the kidnaped victim cowers in ter- ror. It visualizes a tragedy which it dares not express. Forty-eight hours later, the same storm troopers invade the same Jewish house and place two sealed coffins upon the floor. They curtly remark. "The dead men were shot in the back while trying to escape." In silence they retreat. The members of the family surround the coffins of their be- loved ones, and behold a brown tag flapping loosely from the sides of each box, inscribed with the command: "Verboten zu oeffenen" ("It is forbidden to open"). The family is over. whelmed with anguish- The wife and mother of the victims col- lapses, her daughters weep and her sons ■ are transformed into waxen images. They all know that their martyred kin were innocent of all wrongdoing, and that if ted by mistake they would not attempt to escape, for they could prove their inns. cence. But it is forbidden to open the coffins. Why? Whom would it embarrass? Yet so anxious is the family to glimpse, for the last time, at the features of their beloved ones, that they dis- obey the prohibition. They will open the coffins. And since it is a dangerous enterprise. they wait until the early hours of the morning, when the spying eyes of their Nazi neighbors will be closed in sleep. The family of the victims gathe r around the coffins. and bolt the doors and shutters of the room. By the sputtering light of a tiny candle they noise- lessly open the coffins. When the tops are removed and they see their kin, they turn into stone. They see, not dead bodies, but a heap of broken hones, coagulated blood, lacer- ated flesh and distorted. disfig- ured faces. Every hone in the bodies i s crushed and every limb is twisted. Those martyrs had not been shot while trying to escape. They had been torn to pieces by mad, bloodthirsty beasts. Their flesh had been shredded as though they had been the victims of a pack of ravenous wolve s in a now- covered forest. They died not once, but 20 times. But this is not an exceptional case. No Jewish family in the smaller German communities escaped similar tragedies. There is not one Jewish graveyard in Germany which does not sigh for such martyrs. Thousands of Jews in Germany, young •nd old, poor and rich, have, during the past eight months, suffered such beastly deaths. Neither the Spanish Inquisi• tors nor the Czar's pogromi.ts perpetrated such revolting cruel- tie s against their Jewish vic- tims. Compered to our Jewish martyrs in Nazi Germany. our m•rtyrs of the Spanish Inquisi- tion. who were roasted alive, died peaceful deaths. The most barbarous and blood-thirsty sav- age s in the remotest corners of Asia and Africa never dreamed of torturing human creature s as have the enlightened Nazis in civilized Europe. We protest against the perse cation of the Jews in Germany. We cry out against their politi- cal and social degradation. We demand for them the right to live as men. But should we not first demand for them the right to die as men? We demand that Germany withdraw her cruel and discrim- inatory laws against the Jews. The High Com- missioner's decision is the result of negotiations between Dr. Chaim Weizmann and Dr. Nahum Goldman, representing the London conference, the High Commissioner, and the Secretariat of the League of Nations. The investigation was started following conference Represents• live Dickstein had with President Roosevelt. The overwhelming "victory" scored by Adolf Hitler at the elections in Germany last Sunday ironically enough came with the suspected aid of the Jewish voters. Frederick T. Birchall, head of the New York Times European bureau, in his cable from Berlin summing up the election, has this to say about Sunday's vote: "Voting was a rapid operation, quickly finished, because there was no choice over which to hesitate. It was merely a matter of making crosses in two circles, so this doing a patriotic duty became it rather good-humored proceeding.
