POALE HAMIZRACHI
By JENNIE KOTTLER
It need not be repeated here
that when a Chalutz enters Pales-
tine he considers himself fortunate
if he is provided with the neces-
sary axe or shovel for breaking
the rocks or tilling the soil—his
own physical and mental needs
are not considered. These are
not deliberately ignored, but the
unfortunate economic conditions
make it ,impossible for the senior
organizations to take cognizance
of them, with the result that the
Chalutz, after a day of nerve-
wracking labor in the fields or on
the roads, finds no place to retire
for the relaxation that is so neces-
sary for him. Without further
consideration, therefore, it can
readily be seen that one of the
moat important immediate needs
Mizrachi Hatzair of America can
provide for is the establishment
of "Bate Poalim" or social cen-
ters, as we would call them; not
the imposing structures gracing
our American cities, but modest
buildings, which should, however,
house at least the necessary com-
forts. In a very few words, these
are as follows:
First and foremost, sanitary
kitchens and attractive dining
rooms where meals will be pro-
vided at • nominal cost, or where
necessary, with credit.
Secondly, sleeping quarters are
necessary to house the Chalutz
who has but recently entered the
country and has not yet estab-
lished himself permanently.
Thirdly, the spiritual needs
should be taken care of, and when
we consider the fact that a ma-
jority of the Chalutzim affiliated
with other organizations are not
orthodox in their religious observ-
antes, it becomes evident that •
synagogue must be included in
the plan of every one of the "Bate
Poalim."
