officers are not much smarter
and no more careful than he.
But throughout the Middle
Ages, and up to modern times,
the older practice of naming chil-
dren with reference to some event
continued, both among the Sep-
herdic and Ashkenazic groups,
alongside of the custom of nam-
ing them after grandparents or
relatives.
But the majority of people,
whether giving their children
names after departed relatives,
or with reference to some occas-
ion or event, have been and con-
sciously, still are influenced by
beliefs as to the possible influence
of the name upon the child, or
its effect upon the one after
whom it is named.

BOYS' AND GIRLS' NAMES

As these beliefs or supersti-
tions are not shared by all peo-
ple in a like degree, there devel-
oped among different people cer-
tain restrictions upon the selec-
tion of names, which may have
been accepted and heeded by
some, but ignored and desregard-
ed by others. The following are
a number of such restrictions:
Some authorities object to the
practice of giving to a boy the
name of a girl and vice versa.
Some people would refrain from
naming a child after a person
who was killed by non-Jews for
fear lest the sa dfate of the for-
mer bearer of that name befall
the one named like him. The same
fear prevents some parents from
naming their child after another
child of theirs who has died.
Some authorities would declare it
prohibitive to give a child the
name of any Biblical personage
prior to Abraham. And there
are a few authorities who would
object to non-Hebrew or non-Jew-
ish names.
As a result of the belief that
the heavenly authorities know
and can Identify a person only on
the basis of the description of
his full name, there developed in
the course of time a whole sys-
tem of tricks by which to hide the
person from the heavenly agents.
(fence the practice of changing a
person's name when he is sick
became widespread. Bbt there is
still another danger threatening
the person even after his name
has been changed, and this is that
the angel of death might be look-
ing for him not under his own
personal name, but merely as the
child of his parents. To meet this
danger, the parents were changed
• This is done by giving the child
other parents, as it were. The
real parents give away or sell
their child to another couple, to
people against whom, judging
from the fact that their own chit-
dren are all alive and healthy,
there seems to be no charge on
the heavenly records, This trans-
action absolutely confounds the
angel of death.
Another method of safeguard-
ing the life of the child was not
to give it any name at all, or
when a name was given, to keep
it a secret for a time so it was
not registered in the heavenly
records.
As to who should give the
child a name, there has never
been any inflexible rule or fixed
regulations. In Biblical times,
it was usually the father who
gave the name to the child. The
child, in Biblical times was gen-
erally given Its name immediate-
uy at its birth. In Talmudic
times the male child at the cir-
cumeision'on the eighth day after
its birth. This has become the
practice even up to this day. In
the case of girls there has been
no uniformity of practice.
There have, however, never
been any definite laws or uniform
regulations on these questions.
It was all a matter of custom and
usage which were not uniform.
Since customs are governed by
ideas and beliefs which not all
people share in the same degree,
it is not strange to find that the
customs themselves differ so.
Some people are more supersti-
tious, some more rational than
others. Hence, while it is but
proper to follow the customs es-
tablished by the community or
group, it actually makes no dif-
ference what names we give to
children. For no matter what
name a person is given by others,
what ultimately counts is only
the name which he makes for
himself by his actions and his
conduct.
