stated in quarters close to Mr.
Comstock. Democratic leaders ex-
press the regret that there has
been no Jewish candidate elected to
office, with the exception of Her-
man Kramer, who has been elected
to the state legislature from De-
troit.
Mr. Comstock's life record has
always been one of liberal attitude
towards all peoples, Democratic
leaders say, in advising of the ex-
pected appointments of Ed Frens-
dorf to the post of warden of Jack-
son Prison, and Joseph Sanders to
the post of chairman of the depart-
ment of labor and industry.
Ed Frensdorf, under the late
Governor Ferris, was acting war-
den of Jackson Prism and was a
candidate for governor on the
Democratic ticket in 1924. Joseph
Sanders, also a life-long Democrat,
was candidate for Judge of Pro-
bate In 1924, 1928 and 1932, and is
well known in the legal profession
of this city. Mr. Sanders also is
an engineer and has originated
the course of study of engineering
jurisprudence at the Detroit Tech-
nical Institute. A course subse-
quently modeled after his was adop•
ted by the University of Michigan.
That adequate preparation was
lacking is indicated not only by
the fact that the riots have lasted
for several days and that hundreds
of persons have been injured, but
also by the evident knowledge
which the government must have
had of • number of outbreaks go-
ing back to the early part of No-
vember to which attention was
called by one of our associated
bodies through a letter add d
to the Ambassador, dated Nov. 11.
Unfortunately _ther e has since
come to our notice that not only
was necessary adequate prepara-
tion lacking on the part of the
authorities but that in many la-
stances the police either remained
inactive or aided the assailants of
the Jews.
It appears thus that in confor-
mity with the uni Ily recog-
nised principles of humanity and
civilisation, some effective means
can and should be evolved by the
Polish government to insure so
stable an order of life as to pre.
vent manifestations of this char-
acter, which have been all too fre.
quent within recent years.
