The junior order's second major
new project is that of an inter-
national Hebrew essay contest.
This is consistent with one of the
phases of the A. Z. A. program,
namely, the revival of Hebrew as
a language. For some years the
local chapters have organized He-
brew classes, and members in one
part of the country write letters
in Hebrew to those in other parts
of the land.
But what is this fraternity
called Aleph Zadik Aleph?
It was founded in 1924 by Sam
Beber of Omaha, who today is
president of B'nai B'rith's Dis-
trict Grand Lodge No. 6. Ile has
always had a keen interest in
youth, and especially Jewish youth
and, for that matter, is one of the
youngest men ever to be a B'nai
B"rith District President in the
entire history of the order, It
pained him then, as it does now,
to see Jewish youth losing all their
interest and knowledge of Juda-
ism as soon as they were con-
firmed or reached the age of bar
mitzvah. Ile felt that if they
could somehow be held close to
their people during the dangerous
years between 16 and 21 they
would thereafter be mature
enough to stay securely within
the Jewish fold. But how was
this gap to be bridged?
