Every synagogue — permanently func- tioning as well as mushroom—was packed in the his- on Rosh IIashonah. At no time tory of this Jewish community has such a religious revival been evidenced, and there is reason to believe that this turning to God in time of need has also been the experi- ence of other communities throughout the land. It is natural to expect that Yom Kippur Day will witness a similar outpour- ing of the soul of Israel before the Almighty. • To what are we to ascribe this unpre- cedented outpouring of worshippers to synagogues on the Holy Days in an age of unbelief, pessimism and cynicism? It is natural to conclude that the depressing eco- nomic conditions, which have thrown many of the mighty rich and thousands of well- to-do from their high pedestals, are driving Jewslo a spirit of penitence. For the mis- takes which so many have made in busi- ness, and the even greater errors in their social living, they now turn to their God for forgiveness. For the penitent there are untold sentiments expressed in the tenth century Hebrew Yom Kippur hymn, which was thus translated by the late Rabbi Gus- tav Gottheil: "Alone we come to Thee In sorrow and in shame; With daring hope and trust, Now Thy forgiveness claim. "Oh, blest the gracious world, The evangel of this day— That none who turn to Thee Are ever cast away!" Too many, perhaps, now turn to relig- ious thoughts and sentiments in the hope that prayers will cause their guilt to dis- appear. Many will, undoubtedly, on the Day of Atonement, pronounce with fervor the hymn by Moses Nachmanides: '0, Thou who makest guilt to disap- pear, My help, my hope, my rock, I will not fear; Through Thou the body hold in dun- geon drear, The soul has found the palace of the King! 'Unheeding all my sing, I cling to Thee! I know that mercy shall Thy footstool be; Before I call, 0 do Thou answer me, For nothing dare I claim of Thee, my King! "But Judah should behold that bright- er day For which these kneeling pilgrims humbly plead, And like a star on Zion's bosom lay Her beautiful and shining golden head." The motivating cause for the overcrowd- ing of the synagogues is without doubt one of despair and disappointment. But there is reason to hope that the sad lessons of the last few distressing years will serve to react as a spiritual tonic, awakening men and women to their responsibliitics to them- selves, their families, their people, their nation. Perhaps the communion with God during these Holy Days will help to remove the baser instincts of men and women and will re-instill anew the passion for justice and righteousness which always dominated Jewish idealism, forever relegating to the past the mean materialism which stained American Jewish history in the past de- cade. When a Jew Runs for Office. • We have had numerous spectacles of people showing their true colors on elec- tion day. Bigotry let loose a mean display of hate in 1928 when Al Smith was the Democratic candidate for the Presidency. America's most picturesque leader and one of our ablest statesmen, he was defeated because he professes the Catholic faith. In the instance of the Jew running for public office the odds are much more in his disfavor because then the bigoted are re- cruited from the ranks of both the Catho- lics and the Protestants, whereas in the two L,nrisLia.
