United Hebrew Schools has vol-

work. Until now the subjects
taught were Hebrew, elementary
and advanced, Yiddish, and Jewish
history. Plans have now been
cbnipleted to include many more
subjects, such as, the study of the
Yiddish literature, study of the
Bible both in English and in Yid-
dish, and the Mishnah.
A, J. Rosenshine, president of
Young Israel, and Irving Schlussel,
chairman of their educational com-
mittee, are in charge of the adul t

classes, study groups for the adol-

umni under the supervision of the
schools. Max Chomsky, president
of the alumni, and Seymour Til-
chin, chairman of their educa•

On the occasion of Education
Month, Robert :R. Marwil, presi-
dent of the schools, issued the I 01-
lowing statement:
"For the past several years, the
month of October has been desig-
nated by the United Iletnew
Schools as Education Month. I
wish to stress the particular niche
the schools fill in this community.
Through the system of schools
known as the United Hebrew
Schools, comprising eight brunches
in various sections of the city, a
thorough Jewish education begin-
ning with the kindergarten and
going through the high school
course is given to over 1,700 chil-
dren. A great many people are
still thinking of the Talmud
Torahs in terms of the old-fash-
ioned Chedorim. A visit to the
classrooms, more than many state-
ments I can make here, would con-
vince them of the high standing
of the modern Hebrew School. It
would prove to them most con-
clusively that the schools are con-
ducted in a most efficient and
highly profeslional manner.
"There was a time when we
looked to our brethren across the
sea for our spiritual leaders, but

immigration, the Talmud Torahs

"Our history has taught us that
the Jewish religion, the Torah, and
the Jewish people have always
been inseparable. As the rabbis
express it: God, Israel and the
Torah are one.
"The word Torah is very gen-
eral and when used in its broad
sense, it includes the study of the
Bible, Talmud, the past Talmudic
literature, philosophy of Judaism,
holy and secular poetry, the Ile-

for a Jew to become fully ac

Jewish subjects through the me- I

Welfare Board Issues Book-
let on "Woman in Jew-
ish Law and Life."
The National Jewish Welfare
Board, parent organization for
Y. M. H. A.'s, Y. W. H. A.'s, and
Jewish Community Centers, has
issued a publication entitled
"Woman in Jewish Law and Life"
by Emily Solis-Cohen, Jr. This
booklet reviews the position of
Jewish woman, her rights, privi-
leges, obligations, and existing
disabilities. It should prove most
helpful to groups and individuals,
particularly women and girls, who
are interested in undertaking a
study of the role which Woman
played in the various periods of
Jewish history. The Jewish Pub-
lication Society of America, Phila•
delphia, Pa., has published the
booklet for the Jewish Welfare
Board.
