I Jewish People Greeted on New Year
(Continued from Pegs Two.)
I
Statement of Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, rabbi of the Free Synagogue, New York,
and president of the Jewish Institute of Religion, issued a statement
in which he says in part:
"The year 5692 has not been a joyous year for the Jewish
people. Of sixteen millions of Jews, nearly half dwell in the so-called
East-European lands,—Russia, Poland, Rumania. Soviet Russia re-
mains the land nobody knows, least of all American tourists, with
their considered and profound judgments after a week or fort nig ht
of regulated observation. It is true that Soviet Russia gives no E-_, -
countenance to any anti-Semitic movement, and even punishes any
found guilty of instigating or practicing anti-Semitism. But it •s =
t also true that there will be no Jews left to 'anti' if there continue for =
-_
I another decade or two the present Soviet regime, which penalizes E -
Jewish nationalist activity, which, in substance if not in form, inhibits
sl Jewish religious life, which forbids every manifestation of Jewish =
cultural life, excepting for Yiddishistic assimilationism as ally and
abettor of Sovietism.
"As for Poland and Rumania, none save the professional opti-
mists of pulpit and press, whose optimism is at the bidding of their
communal masters,—will deny the fact that the Jewish status is =
woeful in these countries. The regularly recurrent boycotts and last =
autumn's anti-Jewish student outbreaks in Poland, reveal how bitter =
is the fate of the second largest of Jewish populations. Without :=
I stressing too much certain tragic incidents in Rumania, one notes
with sorrow the incertitude of Jewish life in that country. =
"Austria and Hungary remain the medieaval outposts of Central
Europe, both reverting more and more to the shame of little chal-1=
lenged anti-Semitic organization. But the overwhelming surprise =
and horror of the year has been the extraordinary rise of anti- E - s
Semitism in Germany, chiefly though not solely under the aegis of
a Ilitlerism. It may be comforting to the professional Jewish soo 1.-
2sayers to recall that Germany has for a thousand years been recur-
rently the victim of anti-Semitic tendencies and movements, that the ■•■ ••• ■ ••

1 I fact remains that after a thousand years of continuous and bens- =

insulted and harassed, attacked and mobbed, with little more than
tepid intervention and timid defense on the part of the state.
The cowarlly and morally broken, if they survive, will on the =

Scorning to use carnal weapons, we must in justice to our cause use
every weapon of the spirit against violators of the ideal of comity

By the Hias President.
Abraham Herman, president of Illas, writes:
"The year 5692 has indeed been a very trying period for Jews
the world over. Besides the economic condition which has weighed
so heavily upon all peoples, Jews, particularly abroad, have had to
bear the added burden of hatred, prejudice and unfair discrimina-
tions. The world appears to have been aflame with injustice toward
the Jew. It is not a pleasant spectacle to reflect upon.
"The Jewish position has been no intolerable that thousands of
