Economic conditions to the
United States during the past year
were such as to compel the Jewish
community to apply by far the
greater part of its energies to the
solution of its own domestic prob-
lems, including those of contin-
uing the activities and, in some
extreme cases, preventing the dis-
solution, of institutions and agen-
cies which had been created by
the community in previous years.
American Jewry was prevented,
therefore, from taking as active
an interest in its sister 'communi-
ties overseas as in former years,
especially insofar as material aid
was concerned. And yet, har-
roused as they were by their own
difficulties, the Jews of America
maintained, to a measurable ex-
tent, their sense of solidarity with
their brethren in other countries,
to whom they extended their gym-
pathy and such material aid as
their drastically reduced means
made possible. They watched with
interest events affecting their
brethren in many countries, espe•
cially Palestine, Poland and Ru•
mania and, perhaps for the first
time in generations, they followed,
with considerable anxiety, events
in Germany which appeared to
portend misfortune for the Jews
of that country.
A large section of the American
community followed with lively
interest the proceedings of the
Seventeenth Congress of the
EDITOR'S NOTE: This annual review of the Jewish
year is prepared for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by
Harry Schneiderman, editor of the American Jewish Year
Book and Assistant Secretary of the American Jewish
Committee. Mr. Schneiderman's yearly review, which has
come to be a regular Rosh Hashonah feature, covers the
period from Jun 30, 1931, to July 1, 1932, and is based
chiefly on the patches of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, the Jewish and general press and the reports of
many organizations.
