"Neo-Chassidism tries to penetrate the
channels of the five senses to the soul of man.
It is 'sense appeal' and it is in accordance with
old Jewish thought. Rabbi Moses laseles, one
of the great authorities of the middle ages,
stated that the Sanctuary of old was sur-
rounded by a wall. That wall had five doors
leading to the temple corresponding with the
five senses ..
"The synagogue and public services as now
conducted do not appeal to the younger gener-
ation. The Jewish home is vanishing rapidly.
What can be done in order to revive Jewish
riligiosity? Modern Jewry apparently Is not
discouraged by the lack of response of the
Jewish masses. It has continued to build mag-
nificent temples and has invested untold mil-
lions in structures which remain empty.
"I suggest that we build, instead of huge
synagogues, the Jewish home for the congre-
gation at large.
"In order to avoid misunderstanding, I in-
sist most emphatically that the Jewish centers
as built In recent years are not the things I
have in mind. There is nothing Jewish in
them. We can't become Jewish by means of
swimming pool; dancing to the tunes of jazz
a
will not arouse any Jewish consciousness in
our youth; neither will bridge parties or sim-
ilar enterprises help the religious cause.
"What I plan is a beautiful hall in which
the congregation gathers, where people re-
place the leader and the service becomes a
social gathering."

Of course, there is nothing new in Rabbi
Sonderling's proposal. his congregation
will not be the first to appear at service in
full dress. Many individuals are adding a
touch of formality to synagogue attendance
by donning full dress in numerous temples
in this country. In England, it has long
been a practice for men to wear the high
silk hat, and only a short time ago a con-
troversy arose over the wearing even of
the traditional Yarmulke, the discarding of
which was demanded by many in favor of
the silk hat, with the Chief Rabbi taking
sides in favor of the latter.
While it is true that a service is en-
hanced and gains in dignity when congre-
gents appear in full dress, the question
naturally arises whether true religion is to
be sought in dress and outward appear-
ance. In legend and story about Jewish
saints we are often told of the great rabbis
who, when desiring to be unknown to their
congregants, dressed in peasant and beg-
gar attire, thus being in better position to
learn about their people, their mode of
living, their true inner desires to do good
and to help the needy.
Any movement to encourage dignity in
the synagogue should be encouraged. But
in doing so we must not forget the spirit
of the service and the fact that the true
character of a man, or an entire people
for that matter, can neither be embellished
nor covered up by dress. The good that
people do, the spirit that reflects from the
synagogue service, in the end overshadows
outward polish and formal dress.
